Making and selling Lip Balm?
« on: November 24, 2014, 12:00:49 am »
Been melting cappings for candles and thinking about doing lip balm to sale at the farmers market next year. Were's the best place to buy the tubes? do i need labels? what flavors and oz. tubes sale best? how to price them? As you can see, i know nothing about lip balm, or making it. My grand daughters are begging grandpa and grandma to make some, like we need another job 8). Jack

I've made lip balm.  It's quite easy and there are numerous recipes out there on the web.  I lady in my bee club gave me a tube of her lip balm and I wish I had the recipe for that.  It stays on half the day.  The label, on her Cherry flavored lip balm, says it has a Net Wt. of .15 oz.  It contains beeswax, coconut, olive oil, hemp & orange oil, shea and cocoa butter, vitamin E and cherry flavor.
Brushy Mountain has a kit on special at the moment. http://www.brushymountainbeefarm.com/Monthly-Specials/products/105/
The key to not making a mess of your tubes, jars or tins is the little eye dropper looking devices that you use to move your liquid product to your tubes, jars or tins to harden.
Hope that helps.

Jack, I just remembered this company.  Another crafty beekeeper I know uses this supplier for cosmetic supplies. www.wholesalesuppliesplus.com

i think customers prefer the tubes over the small tins, start with those jack. i would put a label on them.  lot's of suppliers out there, just google 'lip balm tubes'.  a few; sks bottle & packaging, elements bath and body, specialty bottle, even amazon sells the tubes. flavors? i think the fruit flavored lip balms probably appeal to the kids, i myself don't care for them.  i asked a lot of folks what lip balms they liked to get an idea.  i stick to a peppemint based or natural, but also will make a limited amount of other flavors.

look over some of the recipes on that thread bakers gave the link to, some good recipes to try out!
