It is an amazing skill, and fun to watch, but I bet the average blacksmith struggles to make a living.  It's like gunsmithing in that it is a fun, manly thing to do that doesn't pay squat.  Do you want your children to grow up to be blacksmiths?  If it makes them happy, I would be OK with it, but I would try to leave some inheritance.
