Now making my own boxes. Love the new jig.

Knocked out a bunch of boxes in a hurry and I was only doing 4 boards at a time. Jig will hold 8 boards.

Very nice. Put some handholds in them and they would sell up here, unassembled, for at least $22 -$25. ;D

Perry, Once I get them together I bought the Molding head cutter for my other table saw. The one like yours. I alredy have folks asking if I;ll make boxes for them. :)

Marbees,
The jig was like 175.00. It should last forever, very well made and thought out.Carl is a beekeeper and is very helpful. The toughest
part is setting it up (not really bad) once set up it's just throwing in stacks of boards and running over dado stack. It truly seemed like we were
just getting started and we were out of boards, and that was 4 at a time not 8.

Send him an email and he will quickly get back to you. He also has a very nice hand hold cutting jig to use on a drill press. Makes nice hand holds. If you order both he gives a pretty good discount.

Depending on the amount of "spare" time you have, building boxes and other certain equipment can add to the thickness of your wallet if you are so inclined. Having a reasonable priced supply of wood is half the battle.

Yep, I am trying some spruce. Its a little lighter than the yellow pine and doesn't seem to have the big hard knots.

I can get a 16 foot board for 10.45, can make 10 supers for around 45 bucks. so 4.50 each.

Have you ever used spruce?

Deeps have to be yellow pine. I can do the deeps for around 6 bucks each.

I've used spruce t & g for bottom boards but don't really like it. Even painted and all, they seem to pick up moisture, plus they seem heavier. Pine for bottom boards is more expensive.
I can get my pine at 50 cents a foot for 9 3/4 x 7/8", and I think it was 42 cents a foot for 8 x 7/8" (for mediums). I have to rip the mediums down to width, but that leaves me with strips for all sorts of stuff like shims, etc.

Thanks Yankee, I do have Beaver 3700, floor model 16" drill press 4840 RPM  ;D , so his handhold jig would be a nice addition...

I'm cutting spruce 2x4's right now for the sides of bee escapes I am building.
Never used it for supers, not sure about weather impact up here

Ok, I got the top tab figured out today. Now I can cut the tab on fronts and backs frame rests  like the boxes from the big guys :-)

And got my handles going. Maybe 10 seconds to cut the hald holds. I'm good to go now.

Made 20 supers for a 90 dollar bill.

Thanks, I have been working on being able to build my own boxes for a few years. I've tried different ways, finally got it now.

Yes, Doing things for myself seems to be in my DNA,

I can now make the whole hive from top to bottom. I am NOT interested in making frames though. So I will always buy frames and foundation.
I'll have to a pencil to what it actually cost me build a complete hive,  deeps and 2 mediums.

I figure at 50 cents a foot for 7/8" x 9 3/4" material I am around $4 (allowing for offcuts) per deep box . But, if you start to consider the wear and tear on your equipment as well as your time, it climbs.
That said, we have to do something in the winter! ;D

Yes sir, keeps me from going nuts in winter.

I don't think I'll be making in mass quantities to sell, but just savings for ourselves is worth it.

Yea, Lowes just started carrying the 1 gallon size.

I love the molding head cutter. Makes a hand hold in about 10 seconds.

Not for the timid though. I need to work on a good jig though.
