I WANT ONE!!  I know some about Danes. When I was a baby my mom had a Dane, Shendo. I have pics of me toddling around with him. Before I was born my mom drove around town in a butter colored convertable with Shendo (fawn colored) in the back seat. Mom had red hair and green eyes. It was quite a sight those two.

When I was grown and had my own family, mom was a freelance writer and also worked at the local newpapers. She wrote up the Humane Society dogs every week and published them in the paper, she had such a poetic way of describing the dogs that most found good homes. One day the Humane Society called her, they must have known her love for Danes, and told her that a pure bred fawn Dane, under a year old, came in. She marched right down there and brought that big boy home. His name was 'Butterfly'. She promptly changed his name to, Shane. Since a pup he had been cooped up in a chicken coop for months and had issues with boys. But he loved my daughter, she was under 5 years then. She could do anything in her child way and he would mind at all. If my daughter was sitting on the couch, Shane would back up and sit on the couch with her.

When the day came, that we had to put him to sleep, I've never heard her bawl out loud like that before.

Hey RRat and Perry, have you ever had two female dogs together? or two male dogs together? Wondering cause I have Katy who is 10 yrs. If I were to bring in another female dane.. well, I dunno. Part of the problem as well, is at the rescue ranches in our area, you are asked to bring your dogs in, and then your dogs and the new proscpective dog will be put into the play yard and see how they get along. Unless a dane shows up in our town, I'm not going to be able to see if there will be a problem. I kinda want a female...

It all depends on the temperament of the dog.  I have had 2 female Danes that couldn't get along and usually once they get into it you will have to keep them separated.

hmmm, that's one of the things I would be concerned with if two danes get into a fight... man, that's a big bodied fight there. May have to consider a male.

One of my pals has a Great Dane.  I tell you one disadvantage is that when the big friendly lugs is leaning on you and steps on your TOES.  They weigh about 160 pounds, and you won't like it when he is standing on a moccasin covered foot.

I'll have multiple male dogs, I can train them out of male male conflicts, but with 2 females it is often a blood grudge and I won't try that again.  Had to rehome my lab mix this past spring when Cici came of age and hit about a year old in January Bella tried to take her face off. I got them apart without serious injuries and kept them apart til I got Bella out of here

(Bella was a rescue who had 28 tricks but couldn't stay and couldn't hear past her prey drive, I kept her 3 years after she chose me, finally got her into and adopted out by the spca this spring. Trying to kill Cici was her last straw.  But she was smart, house trained would do lots of tricks for treats; just stubborn)

That's my reasoning as well Gypsi, females are soo territorial, and Katy is getting old so I don't think I'll introduce a female at this point for her sake. However, she has a brother, Kane, in town that comes over a lot and he stays with us when his owners take vaca's. Wondering if that could be an issue?

Jen, most males will subject to a female, especially on the female's home ground. You shouldn't have a problem with him. You may have to restrain her.

Jen:

In another life time, I raised English Pointers.  The lead lady was always ruled the roost.  Male dogs will not fight females, but the females will eat them alive if they get out of line.  It's just like in the human species.  :)

Lazy and Iddee ~ I have a sister in law that has, over the years, bullied and nagged down her good natured husband to a single piece of nothingness. He now in his later years, hangs out in the basement and watches tv, that's the extent of his life. So Sad!

What my question was tho, is if I have Katy, and I being in another male dog.... and then Kane, her brother, comes over... will these two males fight?

Anything is possible but I'm thinking not so much, not like two females will fight?

If Kane has been there enough to think it's his territory, you will have to spend some time acquainting them with each other. It won't be hard.

I brought home a German schnauzer home on a leash. When we walked in the house, his teeth barred and his ears laid down. I jerked his leash, pointed to each person and the other dog, and told him their name. Then I said, "They live here, too". His lips went down, his ears went up, his tail started wagging and he went straight to them.

Dogs are smarter than we give them credit for.

Thanks Iddee

I do think it's possible too  :)  I think dogs are just like us and any other creature here on this planet. A good meal, a warm place to sleep, and a little companionship goes a looong way  :)

And "HOME" means a lot. Two dogs that get along fine in the street will fight quick if one invades the other's home territory.

You get introduced to a lady at your husband's work, all is well.

He brings another lady home, there's HE77 to pay.

If the brother has a crate, and your male dog has a crate, and they are not the same crate, no issue. If they all sleep in your bed don't think you're gonna get much sleep
