Wood splitter score

I cut and split about 100 to 200 ric of wood a year.  I have been running a 27 ton splitter and decided to upgrade to a bigger heavier 35 ton splitter. I have been Looking at the speeco manufactured splitters they run about $1800 plus tax new.  I scored this 35 ton speeco off a Facebook buy sell and trade site. IT less than a year old and was only used one time. the guy sold his wood stove and didnt have a use for it any longer.  As you can see the paint isnt even worn off the log cradle I picked t up for $850.00 needless to say Im am a happy camper.

You hit the Jack pot squirt, i have the White co. 27 ton splitter and so far it's split everything i've put in it. I put up 3 cords a year to burn in my work shop and usually have some left over. The wood i get around here is Oak (several types), Hickory, Locust, Cedar, and some Black Walnut. Speaking of trees, i've just about made myself sick eating persimmons this year, man they are good and haven't had pucker mouth yet. Jack

Sorry rat , i'm going to have to start wearing my glasses when reading the forum. Maybe it was the post?? i can see where squirt or perry was cutting 100 to 200 ric per year, you don't burn that much wood in a Kan. winter do you rat?? Jack

I burn about 4 to 5 ric a year on a cold year.  I sell a lot, people down this way burn wood but there is not many places to cut unless you know people real well. so there is a market for the wood.  I can get $75.00 a face cord and there are 3  ric to a face cord.  go 200 miles east and you can buy firewood for $45.00 a ric and even cheaper yet over in Missouri as they have more timber.  Down here there is not much timber mostly  hedgerows and some small timber strung along creeks and rivers

Hedge can put out more heat than most wood, i remember putting to much in the fireplace years ago, we had to open the doors to let heat out and it was below zero F outside. The heatalater (sp?) was glowing red . I thought the house was going to burn down. If you have never burned hedge wood, be careful not to load to much in your heating unit. Jack

Hedge is like coal. It has the highest BTU of any wood and it will put out the heat.

I assume you're not referring to privet hedge.  What is hedge wood?  Is there another name for it?

No around here hedge grows into a tree that bears fruit often called hedgeapples or horse apples.  they are about the size of a softball.  Some trees grow up to and over 24 inches in diameter.  Most of the country the hedge stays a bush around here it thrives and grows fast and big

They have been used as fence post for centuries here in Mo. (i'm sure in other states also.) My dad said if you put a hedge post in the ground that is 5 inches on the small end, it will be there when your (hopefully ) in heaven. .. I have several hedge corner post that are 40+ yrs. old and don't look much different than when i put them in. . Jack

    NICE score on that splitter, mine is the 27 ton as well, has done what was needed so far.. I would like to see those fancy processors tie into a big piece of frozen Elm..    Stringy nasty stuff...  Not HARD like oak or locust etc, but WOW it can be a pain to split.. Most folks dont like it.. burns too fast not enough heat...   but that stringy stuff has heated my house for better than ten years now..   Tossing in Hickory, Oak, Locust, cherry and maple with it helps..   Have not had the opportunity to split a decent sized hedge yet.

Scott I guarantee them fancy high production wood processors wont  split hedge.  If they would I would own one.  HAckberry is a lot like elm when it is green.  I am thinking I read somewhere that hackberry is tied in to the elm family

Have a few fellas around that hire the processor to come in and do their logs, its always good timing when they call me each fall to come get all the stuff the processor owner refused to put through his rig.
