Hello from Michigan
« on: January 05, 2015, 05:47:36 pm »
I am a new to bee keeping.  I am in Jackson in south central Michigan.  I hope to have a couple hives in the spring.  It is giving me some thing to look forward to when we thaw out again.

 :welcome:
Howdy Nickald. This is a pretty friendly place with lots of new folk and plenty of "experienced" ones. Then there are some that are as old as all get out, you know the kind, cranky, irritable, stuck in their ways don't like plastic type.  ;) :D :P
Seriously, this is a great place to hang out.

There is, or was, a bunch of old bee keeping books on google you could download for free (out of copyright).  I recall a photo in one of those books of a bee house set up in the Jackson State prison down your way where they would winter the bees in a more sheltered condition than we typically do these days.  I’m picturing in my mind a long shed like structure that probably housed a couple hundred hives.  If I stumble across the book/photo I’ll pass it along.

Lots to learn when starting out, and there is a lot of confusion about how to "best" keep bees.  The good news is just about anything will work and you don't have to strive for perfection in this hobby; because there is none  ;D

That would be neat to see.  I love local history photos.
