There is, or was, a bunch of old bee keeping books on google you could download for free (out of copyright). I recall a photo in one of those books of a bee house set up in the Jackson State prison down your way where they would winter the bees in a more sheltered condition than we typically do these days. I’m picturing in my mind a long shed like structure that probably housed a couple hundred hives. If I stumble across the book/photo I’ll pass it along.
Lots to learn when starting out, and there is a lot of confusion about how to "best" keep bees. The good news is just about anything will work and you don't have to strive for perfection in this hobby; because there is none
