Cabin fever whining.

Looked in the dictionary under cabin fever. Disease often caught by whiny lazy people who should move to AZ.

We had 10F yesterday at 7:00 am when I took the dog out for her first of the morning walk, wind chill was 20 below. As I came back in the house the power went out. I couldn't roll the engine over fast enough to start the big Genset I use on the house but the little one I use for the pole barn started in three pulls. I get it close to the big one hook the battery charger up and soon have it going and power to some of the house.
Eat breakfast then go out and split some wood, boy does the real frozen wood split easy with the maul. Only the worst knots are set aside to go on the power splitter later in life. Wasn't wearing long johns thankfully just jeans insulated flannel shirt, sweat shirt and work mule coat. Coat was the first to go as I was working up a sweat next was the sweat shirt. Power is finally restored just after noon. Un hook the Genset's and put them away with a note I need to get a new battery for the big unit. We had freezing rain over the week end with some snow on top. I plugged the plow tractor in, eat dinner then go out and rough up the ice in the drive way and haul several pails of ashes out to the mail box so the mail carrier doesn't run into my mail box, Would wreck his car, should have made sure the mail box door opened too.



I also took the pup for a long walk after I had got the Genset going and hooked up about a hour and a half. then we went out again after I roughed up the drive way ice. for about a hour.
Today is warmer by 2 degrees and wind has died down to just 2 below. I plan on going to cut next winters wood, well some of it today. I also plan on calling my friend John to see if he can go after some coyotes with me in the afternoon. I am getting hungry for some to grill. Plan on going Wednesday even if I have to go alone.  I sure don't have time to have cabin fever and I haven't even started to work on my bacon wrapped squirrels.

A old friend lives in AZ said they went swimming in the pool at Christmas time as if had cooled enough to get in the water. Said the average temp in July and August was 107F. So if you like heat MOVE.

 I am with you iddee they can have all the cold stuff they want for I am satisfy right where I am at even if it did get to 30 this morning and down to 18 by Thursday, up to 58 today.

    That's Funny Alley ~ I'm doing just fine here in upper northern California, we get all the seasons and mostly nice weather

The point is they live in Michigan the land of four seasons, hot and humid in the summer, I hate that weather but only  complain to those who I hear complain in the winter. Spring, starts muddy and wet with days of nice sunny warm weather and a  temp drop and snow the next day. Fall, with days of rain and sloppy mud for a few weeks, warm nice sunny days and days with wind and temps near zero.
So living in Michigan get a winter hobby, there are a ton of things to do in the winter outside and inside. No reason to get a cabin fever unless to lazy to move out of your own stink.

My daughter lives in Wisconsin, she knits and crochets hats scarves and mittens in the winter and makes a bunch of money selling them right from her own living room. She doesn't even have to go out to ship them. USPS delivers the size boxes she request and when they are full of the product they pick them up at her home.

   Now... I will eat about anything. I would NEVER starve to death if I had a coyote to eat, but they are not on my list to eat under normal circumstances...

   Excellent thought about the cabin fever/whining thread!  Got to go out and plug the tractor in before church, so I can take a new round bale to the horses after church..  Also need to get some more of the logs cut and split for the wood stove..  going to wait till wed or thursday though, supposed to get up near 32 degrees!!

Snowing out right now but I don't need a clean driveway till it gets around the 3 foot mark. Even then I don't need to plow it if I want to take the time to put my chains on.
I do how ever need to get a load of fire wood down to the furnace room or it will get to cold to live in the house.

We got 3 coyotes Tuesday afternoon, Just johns brother and I. Did think any were young enough to be tender enough for the grill but saved a bit for the crock pot.

•Stewed Coyote
Four pounds of coyote meat cut into one inch cubes. 11/2 cups of vinegar. A tablespoon of pepper. Two tablespoons of salt. Tablespoon of garlic powder. Half cup of cooking oil. Two large yellow onions, diced. Three cups of tomato sauce. Ten cups of boiling water. Two red bell peppers cut into strips. Two bay leaves. One teaspoon of Tabasco sauce. One can of pineapple chunks.

Marinate the meat in a mixture of the recipe's vinegar, pepper, salt and garlic powder for two hours. Fry the meat in the oil, using a large wok, or a large cast iron skillet. Add the onions, pineapple and sauté until tender. Once tender, pour into a pot, adding the tomato sauce and boiling water, add your bell pepper, bay leaves and Tabasco. Cover and simmer until meat is tender. (My dear friend Phil Schweik says you can substitute lamb for the coyote, because the taste is similar, but why would you he asks, since coyote is a heckuva lot cheaper than lamb!).

•Grilled Coyote
Slow cook the coyote meat over a grill, marinate with some fruit based glaze, roll in cabbage leaves when done, and serve with steamed white rice.

Yes you could but then you would not take the yuk factor away from those so disposed to go yuk. They are not even qualified to yuk if they haven't tried it either.

gah...  So I mentioned this to a friend, and it seems, he has CANNED coyote...   (It is actually in jars)   So that afternoon he made "coyote" and noodles, and I tried it, JUST, so I can say I did...       







    Well, I think I will have to load a few cartridges for the turtle gun. I was impressed.


   Cabin fever is REALLY beginning to set in now..  I am down and out again.. for a couple days at least..
   Sharpening the blades for my planer with a big sharpening stone..
   I had the blade bolted to a table, sharp edge out, so I could run the stone across the edge.. it worked perfectly!!! Until my pinky finger sort of hung down a little and got scissored between the stone and the blade as I shoved the stone up across the edge...
   Took the tip of my finger off, chipping the bone as the blade passed it..
   Actually wasnt too bad, blade was sharp enough that it hurt a bit..  I had my daughter wrap it up with the standard paper towel and electrical tape, and went back to work..    finished sharpening, put the blades in the planer, shaved the 2x12's down to 1 3/8.... and the finger started to throb...
  SO I went home and took aspirin, but the throbbing continued to get worse.....
   Tied my hand to the headboard to keep it above my heart.. took sleeping meds, and some codine, slept about two hours...  spent the next day REALLY hurting, and listening to everyone say, go to the doctor!!
   For what? So he can use a brush and scrub out the wound and hurt me worse?  NO!
   Finally got some sleep last night, hand still tied to headboard..  I told my wife NOT to get any ideas.....  it didnt work, she didnt get any ideas....  feel a bit better today, throbbing comes and goes...   With luck, I will be back in the shop tomorrow so I can stop wearing holes in our floors here with all the pacing...

I have a rule, my fingers don't get any closer than 6 to 4 inches of any power tool with blades, then it gets pushed through with a stick or not at all. I also don't wear loose clothing around rotating machines. Been called out (when on the rescue squad) to many times and seen to many bad injuries because of carelessness. Jack

Thats the sad part of the tale Jack..  the blader wasnt ion the planer, it was bolted to the table, so it was my OWN power that did the damage. It is MUCH nicer to blame someone else, or to blame a circumstance beyond my control, but in this case I have no recourse..
   Some people claim that theres a woman to blame, but I know....  Its my own darn fault!

I’m getting queasy imagining appendages, blades, and blood. :'(  Hope the finger is getting better!  Knock on wood, no sharp objects pocking into me since that rusty nail a couple of months ago….

We’re sitting at -7F air temp right now.  I really hate single digits and below.  That kind of cold just causes too many problems.   I hate it even more when I gotta get my butt out into that cold.

10 below right now at 5:30 AM. Puppy dog will have to use the papers I laid down for her this morning. TV weather guy just said will be below zero till after 10:00 AM. I still plan on going out and splitting wood I cut up yesterday.

Things are so different today to dress the cold. Only thing I don't miss from when I was a kid was the wool long johns our mom bought for us boys. Brother and I used to go out to the barn before walking to school (9uphill both ways)strip those darn itchy things off and hide them in the hay. Going commando in the cold was way better than wearing that under wear and digging ones self raw because of the itching.
These days I have two different fabrics silk and man made, 3 different weights medium heavy and ultra.

Throbbing is from the nerve endings having been cut off.

I layer up in this kind of cold.  Probably not doing it properly though since I can barely move from so many layers......

For those of you that haven't participated, skinning a coyote is a tedious, difficult task.  And no, I have never before heard of anyone eating a coyote, although many cultures eat dogs.
