I am seeing some that are voice activated. So would come on when you started talking.

The question would be if it picked up the buzzing bees, then it would just stay on all the time.

Or the sound of wooden ware being moved around.

Jack, you are bad!  You sound like a prepubescent boy!

bakers, jack's telling on himself, he can't use a digital recorder for that reason.............it would be on all the time......... :D

yankee, yes, mine does activate/ pick up the sound of the bees at the hive, woodenware, frames, being moved around, and the birds.........
i don't find it annoying, if you leave it on (which i have done) you don't have to fast forward so much to get to your note taking, hope this helps.
i always check the batteries and carry extras, but i don't have the hives you do.

tefer's olympus digital note recorder is a pretty neat little unit, i have it, i also bought the next one up, has more options, plug into pc, download your files to it,  and has different mic settings, for recording up close or from a distance, and some other features, but still simple to use.  the mics on these things are incredible.  the battery life is also very good on these.

Olympus VN-702PC Voice Recorder
823 hours of recording time! You could keep years of inspections on that unit. Time to upgrade!

My girlfriend was on my computer and saw I was looking at cattle tags.  She was curious why.  I told her I was thinking about ear tagging my bees.  Her response was "oh".  Then it sunk in.
