Cattle tags to number hives...
« on: January 06, 2015, 08:35:21 pm »
If you think about it, a hive is the same thing as a Heifer (mother cow).  ;D

I'll just use a screw and screw this to the front of the hive. If I need use box somewhere else I'll just unscrew the tag. I think I am gonna like this better than stenciling the numbers on and have to paint over them and re-stencil. Also use them on nuc boxes.

I like that idea too, but I just had a thought.....I wonder if bees count in decimal (base 10) or senary (base 6).  They have 6 legs after all  ;D

I like the idea!  Where do you get the tags?

Any farm supply store has them . TSC, orchelins atwoods.  Or you can order online from this company.  http://www.cattletags.com/  Really a good inexpensive idea for marking hives

Hm? Good idea! How big are those as compared to say.. a quarter?

They are usually about a 2 to 3 inch diameter or square

I've been using the smaller ones for calfs, like rat said any farm supply store will have them, 25 tags between $20.00 two $30.00 and they last for years. Jack

We screw some of these on to number our outfit.

We tried some of the plastic cattle tags and they just don't hold up. Kept splitting them where they screw on.

Another good idea. Those are cheaper.

My question is why your cattle tags didn't hold up. I don't plan on putting the screw into wood to where it holds the tag tight to the box. Just let the tag hang. It also goes on a deep box and my deeps don't get moved around all that much. Just curious.

It is nice to know there is a alternate device. Thanks

I wonder if you could put a tag on the stand, and think of a numbered location instead of a numbered hive.  It would save the stenciling and painting and screws....Just asking.  :)

Lburou, i combine the two, i know the location and which hive i'm talking about. Now if i would or  remember  to write down what the problem is or was wrong with that hive. Maybe i'd remember why i put a tag on them. :D Jack

Lb,

That seems more confusing to me. If I move a hive (which I do) then I think that would mess up my books. I'm also gonna put these on my nuc boxes so when I make up my nucs I can track their progress. Last year when I made up my nucs I had trouble remembering which nuc had problems and which were good. I would have to look at all them each time I checked.

Also, I didn't stencil those. I ordered them printed that way.

I attach numbered small squares to the rear of each hive.

The squares are made from cut up plastic containers, number marked with a permanent marker and secured with a push pin.

Is it re-cycle.... re-cycle ... re-cycle              or just CHEAPSKATE  ??   ;D

I got a quote from The Cattle Tag.  To get 50 med. tags from 0-50 with Cree's Bees above the number will cost. $0.63 each.  $13.00 to ship.  So, for $0.89 per tag I can get a personalized numbered tag for my hives.  I too forget what's going on in each hive. So, I'm always looking for a easy way to track.
I'll have to give this more thought.

Anyone here use the QR code (offered by hivetracks.com, you scan it with your phone) to keep track of hives?

Lee, is that available only for subscribers?  I don't see that available for this free user.
Good thread, BTW.  I am learning something here.  :)

I'm not a 'subscriber' but can see and print the codes, so, you should be able to too -you may need to be a paying member to get/use the mobile app though.  Try again with one foot held in the air...  ;-)

If that doesn't work, try this:  From the Dashboard, click 'My Hives".  Then, look for the dark banner running from the right to the left side of your monitor (probably somewhere near the middle of your screen), you will see "QR Codes" as one of the options.  Finding that button, you should be able to work your way through printing on avery labels.  HTH   :)
