I looked at hive tracks, and have used a couple different systems...   I finally gave up on recording information about everything, IE as in some of the yard sheets.. you check off everything, saw the queen, saw eggs, frames of brood, etc, etc, etc..    Now I write down when I find a  problem..   Yard, Hive number, and what the problem is..   If NOTHING is written down I did not notice anything untoward with that hive during the last inspection. It is saving me time and paper so far..
Next time I go past the supply store I will look at the tags. I think thats a pretty good idea..  I have numbers on top of the hive tele covers atm.. and have found myself switching them around when combining, splitting and moving hives..  Tags, Deck screws, and my battery powered drill and I have all I would need.

Gonna be putting my tags on tomorrow.

High 32, don't think I'll need a veil.

Bought a binder and some dividers. I will make a divider labeled worth each yard and use those sheets you sent me Lazy. I printed a couple hundred out. My plan is to use those sheets as a master for certain things of each hive. I will carry a "field notebook" in my truck to make notes like you suggest. Then transfer the things needed (not everything) to the Binder.

We place our numbers on the bottom board on singles and on each corner of the pallets.
The main reason the plastic tags didn't work was because moving them knocks them off.
Plastic and cold weather don't get along together.
We gave up notebooks long ago and just use a cheap voice recorder stuck in a pocket to take notes. $39.95 and it has 70 hours of storage and 2 double AA's last all season.
KISS!

Just turn it on before you get out of the truck, Scott. Or better yet! Just turn it on for the day.
I've left it on for a couple days and recorded everything around it.
I very rarely write anything down any more. Just listen to the last inspection to see what to bring with.

That's a pretty good idea with the recorder.

Would be easy to go back,  listen and make a to-do list for the next trip out to the yard.

I got mine at Wallyworld. $39.95 a couple years ago.

I see they have a newer model down the page, looks the same as the old one.
I don't remember ever changing the battery yet.
Could just be my old brain can't remember crap!!!

Tefer, do you carry it in your pocket or do you have to hold it in front of your face for it to pick up properly?

Ok, got over 30 of them done today. I like them.

Oh and BTW, #33 and #62 need another sugar cake  ;D and now I know exactly which ones I need to put them in when I go back down there. Instead of going, now which ones need them, nope wasn't this, nope wasn't this one,,,,

Also, even bigger news. No dead ones yet, all alive

I am getting me a voice recorder though.

Crazy,

Lazy sent me a link to Inspection sheet that I printed a bunch off and put them in a Binder, they look pretty simple and have most of what you would want to keep with. plus some.  He will probably re post here for you or it in a thread I started called "Record Keeping"

I have it on my web site under the inspections tab;

http://outyard.weebly.com/inspecting-a-hive.html     About 3/4 of the way down...

   Look up a good hive inspection sheet and print it. Eastern Missouri Beekeepers Association has an excellent hive inspection sheet available to download and print at;
http://www.littlehouseonthebighill.com/beekeeping/images/inspectionsheets/hiveinspection20130827.pdf

(Copy and paste into your browser bar)
Set the printer to fit the image to the page. I also printed it in black and white.

I just place it in the shirt pocket of bee my jacket. I sometimes just set it on top of the pallet I'm working on. The mic picks up from a short distance away. No need to shout, normal voice volume.

We use the tags on the bees so if some one complains they got stung by one of our bees we can ask for the tag number and know if they are laying and which bee will be missing from the hive.

Kare has her own method using a spiral note book two yards to a book. Starting on the far left,  end is number 1 the last hive is the far right hive.

I have a mico recorder that is a vox machine I always took it to bee meeting when there was going to be a speaker to record every thing the speaker said so I could review the information.

Looks like I have a voice recording App on my smart phone. Think I'll try using that. I usually have that in my bee jacket pocket for picture taking, Not sure how fast it will drain my cell phone battery.

If I like using it for notes  (which I think I will) then I may look at something like a voice activated recorder to buy.

tefer's olympus digital note recorder is a pretty neat little unit, i have it, i also bought the next one up, has more options, plug into pc, download your files to it,  and has different mic settings, for recording up close or from a distance, and some other features, but still simple to use.  the mics on these things are incredible.  the battery life is also very good on these.

I have an Olympus digital voice recorder VN-7200 that I really like.  It's about the size of an old flip phone and uses AAA batteries.  I use the Olympus for recording new fiddle tunes but never thought of using it for record keeping.   You can download audio files onto your computer for storage.  Very clever.  I have had two other Olympus models that drove me crazy.  They were difficult to use, went through batteries fast, small storage, and just quit working for no apparent reason. The cost for this one was just under $40.00, I think.

The down side to this: could easily fall on the ground and you would never know it because it's so light and wouldn't be able to operate it unless bare handed or with nitrile gloves.  If purchasing new, I think I would look for something that has a battery saver and shuts down automatically during long periods of inactivity, if there is such a thing.

I am seeing some that are voice activated. So would come on when you started talking.

The question would be if it picked up the buzzing bees, then it would just stay on all the time.
