Cracked Feet
« on: January 14, 2015, 09:36:07 am »
OK bee keepers, what’s your secret for preventing (or healing) cracked hands and feet this time of year?  Talking cracked skin here, not bones. :)

I’ve found a pretty good method for my hands, but the feet need some more work.  :o

For my hands, I lather them up in lotion, then put on a pair of those thin blue Nitrile, or latex gloves, and then normal gloves if working outside.  The blue gloves and lotion work good at night too keeping me from slipping out of the bed….

I have terrible cracking on the hands from Dyshidrosis.  The Dr finally said try heel balm from Walgreen to see if it can get you some relief.  Stuff works great.  It has a lot of the indigence used in lotion bars.

I don't know how this would work (stay on ) feet? but i found that if i scrape propolis from inside the hive and put a small piece in my mouth to soften it enough so you can push and spread it across the cracks on my hands the pain goes away instantly. It's sticky, but after it sets up it will stay in the cracks when you wash your hands. If i put it on before going to bed i sprinkle powder sugar on it to to keep it off the sheets ;D, that will get you in trouble ???. You can also put powdered sugar on it and put on rubber gloves. I know that Squirt and perry are laughing about my RedNeck remedy :P, but it works for me. Jack

I use nothing during the day. Soaking them in hot Epsom salt water for an hour at night keeps them smooth and without cracks or dryness.
Mine comes from agent orange.

You need more than a lotion, pure shea butter, not perfumed..Pure! It's very thick. And a pair of loose socks when you go to bed. Also, get one of those foot paddles from your local Walgreens or where ever. You have to get the hard dead skin off first, don't file down to far, you don't want red sore patches on your feet from over filing. This will help the cracks heal faster.

So, file you feet, pure shea butter, socks. Day and night care. Works on both hands and feet.

Get one of these

Don't get one of these, we who are in the foot business call these cheese graters. Not good for your feet!

ps. riverbee's avon product sounds promising.

Cornhusker's lotion works wonders for your hands.  Haven't tried it anywhere else.  :)

Jen beat me to the punch on foot care.  File away those extra layers of dead skin.  They just encourage splittting and cracking.  Soak your feet in warm water, or immediately after a shower or bath, file it off. A little hand (=foot) cream will help keep  the remaindeer soft and should enable the cracks to heal.
In the first years when I worked as a farm mechanic, my hands would develop cracks and sores that lasted me all winter.  Until I learned to use plenty of thick hand cream regularly.  It worked wonders.

No discussion encompassing the subject of chafed skin should be without Bag Balm.  It works well too, and has alternative uses as well.  :)

If anyone else is as ignorant about Bag Balm as I was until a few minutes ago, you can try this link:

Thanks Lee, for the introduction and for raising my curiosity.

Also, for those who have painful open cracks, like around your thumb nails, this works wonders in stopping the pain, and seals the cracks so they stop cracking and splitting, which helps them heal faster. I used to work in a community kitchen, so doing large batches of dishes made the ends of my fingers crack and bleed, it's very painful. This got my fingers healed in a hurry and working was much more comfortable.

My concern with the various lotions is having them wiped off in the socks or gloves.  I suspect most of them will work, if they stay in place long enough.  That’s why I like the idea of a heavy weight lubricant; harder to wipe off.  I’ve never heard of this shea butter until now.  Jen, where does one buy the stuff?

Logic, do you have a natural foods store where you live? or do you order off of Amazon.com?

logic, like jen said you can get shea butter off amazon or other sites that sell ingredients to those of us who use it for mixing in the beeswax for different recipes....if you google shea butter, you will get a myriad of websites that carry it.

"My concern with the various lotions is having them wiped off in the socks or gloves.  I suspect most of them will work, if they stay in place long enough.  That’s why I like the idea of a heavy weight lubricant; harder to wipe off."

true logic. i posted about the avon intensive therapy hand cream. i had a guy friend, carpenter, works indoors outdoors year round, who suffered severely from cracks in his hands and the heels of his feet. very dry skin in the winter.  i gave him a tube of this stuff. his hands were pretty bad and painful.  i told him to smear it on, it does soak in, doesn't wipe off, doesn't leave a film, or greasy feeling.  being a manly man he was skeptical, but it worked. he wore socks to bed with it on, and told me he wore some sort of gloves also for a few days............ :D not necessary. he uses this stuff regularly in winter months, not a problem since.  not saying it will work for everyone, but it's good stuff to try. comes in regular and oatmeal base.  we have been using it for about 20  + years, no dry/cracked skin. winters here are brutal, no humidity in the air.

This stuff works

http://okeeffescompany.com/

This web site reinforces the concept of exfoliating before applying the lotion to your feet.  This cream looks like serious healing medicine.  I may look for this.

Logic- I think any of the balms mentioned so far would be just fine. Lotion won't due, it should be a balm or butter or thick cream. I would be happy to send you one of my balm bars that I made over the holidays. They contain Shea butter, Coconut Oil, Beeswax right out of Iddee's hives.

Here are pics of what shea butter looks like
