Dang. Those are in trouble, I mean serious trouble up here. We've lost something like 95% of our bat population in the last 2 years.

Shhhhhh, (whispering) Dont' tell Riverbee  :D

Logic! I think 'Friend' for sure! However, my wildlife biologist friend, says that when a bat is on the ground, or tub, something is wrong. Be very careful not to touch him/her.

Do you have a wildlife and game office near you? they may want to know if bat has white nose syndrome.

Perry- unfortunately, our bats here in california are starving to death from the drought. Our fish and game personnel is saying there isn't enough pollen or nectar for the bats to fatten up for winter, and there is also a marked shortage of mosquito's. It's getting pretty sorry here on the west coast for our little critters

There's a fungus or infection or something killing all the bats down here.

logic is the ceiling open? or what's above it? also, your lathe and plaster, is that an outside wall, inside wall, and is it open to your attic?

sometimes the little critters find their way down into the living area through whatever opening has been provided.  nice tub btw!......... :D

That’s an inside wall.  This is an old Craftsman style (bat) house built around the turn of the century.  All the walls are still plaster and lath with ZERO insulation in the exterior walls.  Last night they said we had the coldest night ever recorded in our area for any day of any year. :'(  Did I mention it’s been COLD here!  Hope the bat didn’t freeze.

This bat is a lot smaller than the last bat I rescued.  I dropped the ceiling in the bath so make it easier to run modern plumbing and electrical.  The old plumbing had no vents of coarse and the old electrical was knob and tube of course!  I’m sure the bats and getting in through the 8’ hole, but I still haven’t really spotted where they’re hanging out in the attic.  It really been a little too cold to go crawling through the coal dust looking for them.

Have you tried to nudge bat to see if there is any movement?

He/she was alive the last time I was in the house.  This is a renovation and I'm not living in the house.  I haven't been there in a few days since we've been having such bitter, below 0F, cold weather.  I'll probably try to relocate the bat to the attic, or the garage tomorrow.

The white nosed bat syndrome is now thought to have come to the Americas via contaminated equipment as it came back from spelunking adventures in the caves of central Europe.  European bats are immune to the effects of this fungus. When it showed up in the Americas, our bats have been decimated as the sickness has spread from the point of introduction in New England.  I would ask my local fish and game office to see if they are interested in data from dead bats in your area.   :)
