Want To Sell A Nuc
« on: March 30, 2015, 11:02:25 pm »
I would like to sell a nuc  ;D  Does it matter if when selling a nuc, if the frames are in an actual nuc box, or deep, or medium?

Jen,

I think most nucs are usually 5 deep frames. But I do have a friend that uses only mediums. He didn't have any trouble selling 25 of them last summer.

A Nuc box is just a tool to temporarily house and transport the bees, so no it doesn't really matter how they are housed.  A full size box with a follower board is the same as a Nuc box.   You don't want the frames swinging around during transport and crushing the queen.  As long as the buyer plans on using the same type of gear, it does not matter if they're medium or deep.
My advice: worth price charged :)

Hey Jen, that would be a good way to get rid of those deep frames if you want to go to all mediums.  ;D

As the others have said, the actual box you provide is usually just used for transport.  However you could offer to sell the nuc in a full sized box and just add that cost to the sales price.  Saves you from making a smaller box and the new beek from having to move the frames to a full sized box at home.  Or just have the newbee bring their own box.  You could even sell a whole box (8 or 10 frames) of deeps if you wanted; ideally for a higher price of coarse.

What about the cardboard nuc boxes? anyone use those for selling?

See, I'm seeing having to make a bottom board and a lid for transport? How would the buyer transport a nuc in a medium hive box with no bottom?

A nuc is a Permanant way of maintaining an extra queen or fifty.. Of getting extra drawn comb, and for producing extra bees to use for bolstering production hives. They can also supply the resources for more nucs if you keep them permanently, PLUS, you need to fuss with them a lot more than you should, would or will a production hive...  Nucs SAVE my production hives from having me poking my nose in them as often...
But yes..  what ever box you wish to use, and advertise it as exactly what it is..   you could use a standard hive body with a follower board etc...     So long as you advertise it as a medium 6 5/8 5 frame nuc, or what ever you are selling it will be fine..    I like the mediums, because even the folks who use deeps can use them, either by dropping the medium frames in a deep, or by using a medium super on top of a deep, then adding another deep under it when the first two are full.
Once I explain that the folks who want deeps usually have the light go on and they are quite content with the medium nucs.

K, that sounds reasonable. What about if I decide to split this Hot Hive of mine, requeen, then sell several nucs from it, in the cardboard nuc boxes?

And, my other question was: if I put a 5 frame nuc into a med with a follower board, what do you use as a bottom and lid for transport?

Yes, you can use the cardboard nucs.

I make them bring their own container, whether it be a nuc or full size box, and we transfer the frames into their equip.

Cardboard nuc boxes or they bring their own equipment as Iddee said.   Most folks will bring their own equipment to save the few bucks on the cardboard nuc boxes.

So then I could have the nucs already pulled and set aside. Then when customer comes I just pull the frames out of that nuc and put them into their boxes... yes?

So what would I tell them to bring, assuming maybe they are newbees? a hive box, a bottom board, a lid?

I'd add some screen to close them up, and a ratchet strap to hold it all together!

Hi Tef, you mean you do that to your own box when you go to pick up a nuc?

The customer can bring their own equipment to take the bees home.
You just need to add a couple more items to your list, someway to vent them, and something to hold it all together. We have cardboard and plastic nuc boxes for pickup when needed.
Does cost you more though.
Haven't bought a nuc in years!

Okay, I think I see now. If I want to go pick up a nuc for myself, I would take a hive box, lid, and bottom board, screening, duct tape to screen off the entrance, and a ratched strap.

But if a customer was coming without any equipment to my house, I could send him/her off with a nuc in a cardboard nuc.

I like the idea of having a few cardboard nucs stashed away. Been pricing them, they are competetive around $7 each.

And don't forget to tell them that pick-up is early am or at dusk when all the bees are in.
I don't know that I would sell nucs using bees from a hot hive, new queens or not. Those bees are still hot until they die and are replaced.

That is in my thoughts as well. I'm slicing and dicing this decision. What I need to learn is the math of the hive.

Do people buy nucs in the Fall? probably not a good time right?

What if in 10 days, I get into the hot hive and find that there is a new queen and she is laying. How long does it take for the prior bees to die out?

I know that hers will be born in 21 days.

If I pulled a nuc from the hot hive and requeened, I would wait until the new queen was laying eggs, at least to see her brood pattern.

After that you could wait maybe two or three weeks and their temperament should be changing for the better (hopefully), before you let the customer pick them up.

Okay, so if I pull a nuc... three frames of capped brood (and honey and pollen)... then install a new queen... the existing capped brood is going to hatch out in the nuc and live for 5-6 weeks. Aren't those going to be hot bees?

I think I'm not going to make this decision yet, the hot bee nuc thing, maybe another season when I've gained more understanding of the math.

I'll come back to this later ~ Thanks for the info on how to trasport a nuc  ;)

Fall's not a good time to buy nucs.  Why chance overwintering them.  Best to sell in spring
