Foundation (not cell) Size
« on: April 01, 2015, 10:22:25 pm »
Although I will still use up what I have left of Duragilt, I just ordered 25# of wired deep foundation with hooks from Mann Lake.  My question is where'd the other 1/8" go?  All deep foundation (except "with hooks") is 9 1/2" tall.  The hooks are spade signed to bend over the top of the wedge for increased durability and stability.  If they're bend at that 90-degree angle, wouldn't that would then make them 1/8" too short?

I'm making my frames, for the most, following the instructions Scott provided.

I have always used Walter T. Kelley foundation for just that reason. They are 1/8 longer than all the others I have bought.

Too late now, as my order has already been placed... But I notice that Mann Lake doesn't mention cell size, Walter T. Kelley does.  I hope I didn't make a $210 mistake?  This foundation is for the brood boxes, not honey.

You just might find that different suppliers build their frame a tad bit different and also make their foundation sized to fit their frames.

I have always bought Kelley's or Brushy's foundation, they seemingly interchange with each other.

i like to run wedge top bars and split bottom bars, lets the wax foundation "hang" straight down. If using a grooved bottom and te foundation is a little long then you could find the foundation buckling when it heats up just a little.

you will find those hooks stick out just a wee bit.   the wedge is approximately 1/4 inch, and the bottom groove is about 1/4 inch deep in a 3/8 bar.. so if there is a discrepancy of 1/8th of an inch your still good, just as long as its not 1/8th of an inch too long.

there are lots of choices in foundation both in size, ripple wire or plain and thickness (three ply or thin surplus).  I would guess what you are considering is ripple wired foundation for a frame with a wedge in the top and a solid bottom bar.  The old kelleys catalogue had a nice chart of all the choices.

Update... I called Mann Lake and asked about the cell size of what I ordered: 5.1
