First successful graft.
« on: April 06, 2015, 05:44:28 pm »
Notice the ad on the front page for BEEZ NEEDZ. I have been helping them get their business off the ground and teaching them to raise queens. All their queens will be "Wayne's bees". The first two attempts were -0- take. Saturday was the third time. Yep, third time was the charm. We checked them today and found 3 nice cells being drawn, and the bees covering several more. We put the frame back without shaking or removing the bees for a full count. Hopefully, there will be several more. We will be setting up another hive with a cloake board this week while they are finishing those cells in that one. Will try the 4th graft Friday or Sat.

Hoping to start making queens next week here..  lots of sealed drone cells a few days ago, so we are way ahead of the curve.

Put 2 of the 3 in mating nucs Tues. and grafted again today. Will check the graft Mon. and the mating nucs in a week or two. Broke down a few hives and made nucs Mon. Hopefully have a queen for you, Jack, and a couple others by end of may. Maybe sooner.

Iddee's place is always open. We never close. When are you planning on coming? Just bought an 18 foot bass boat today to go with the 24 foot pontoon. Family can go out on the pontoon while the men go on the bass boat.

I am trying to narrow down a good time..   Sounding like the end of May, but we are having a gathering here at my place on the 30th, and Zweef is going to be here on the weekend of the 23rd.. so maybe the weekend of June 6th?  I can be there Friday evening, get set up at the hotel.. spend the 6th and 7th hanging out with you, then head back on Monday?

Its about a 16 Hour Drive, so i would leave here around 4 AM to be there around 10 PM.  Crash for the night and then come hunt you down the following morning?
What do you think?   I'll have to see if thats a good time for Eagle Eye ted too..

You make your plans and I will set mine around them. I am fully adjustable. When you get to Indianapolis, do not go to Louisville. Go to Cincinnati and hit HWY. 32 to HWY. 25. Take it to I-64, then I-77 into NC.

That reply doesn't tell me which motels to inquire into. I don't use local motels, so don't know which to recommend until I know what you like. Do you want motel 6, the Hilton, or HOT L BALTIMORE?    ;D

I dont really care, I prefer to stay away from the cheaper ones, but if thats what is closest and most convenient its only three nights.  Let me know what is closest.

Grafted again Saturday. Checked them today. Bees covering most of the cell cups, but we counted 12 takes. Could be a few more. Will know more Saturday. All are wayne's bees.

whew..   glad to know you have made strides in saving those bees.  I was getting a little concerned.  With luck, the queen/nuc/hive I buy from you can be replicated up here.   I have a perfect outyard waiting down by the river.

We shook bees today and populated the mating nucs. We will add the cells tomorrow.

Cool!  One day, if and when I retire, I want to learn to graft queens.

We put 16 cells in mating boxes today, and one in a nuc. 2 weeks will tell the story.
