Success!!!!!!
« on: April 11, 2015, 02:04:24 pm »
The swarm trap I put in the tree has yielded fruit!  Dad called me a few minutes ago and said, "there's a lot of bees flying around that box in the tree, we may have a swarm!"  Sure enough, there's hundreds of bees flying in and out and around, like they've lived there all their life.  I won't know if they came from my hive until I can get in there, which may be several days from now.  But this is the date of my first swarm last year.  At any rate, I think I've doubled my hive count today.  I plan on leaving it in the tree for a day or two to make sure they're going to stay put.  Then I'll move it down to the bee yard and put another box up in the tree. The bees sure love that dogwood tree for some reason.  There's all kinds of other trees around, but the sure go to that one.  Yea for me!    :eusa_dance:

OOOHHH!! Yes!! It will not be long now for me either since I am just a tad north of you.

I can't wait, could use about 10 good swarms to fill up some empty boxes.

Last year you could have just set them up near my yards and done well. :-[

   LOL!!
I went and gave a bid for a removal this morning, and was awarded the job on the spot..   so the Mighty eagle eye TED has been offered the position of MINION on this removal, and accepted, so I think this should be a successful cut out.
Hoping for a dozen or more cut outs this year to boost hive numbers beyond splits..  This particular hive has been in this house for three years according toe the owner, who purchased it three years ago..   To me, that says survivors..  but we will find out when they get moved to the outyard.

I went down this morning to check out the swarm box and  there were just a few bees around.  They didn't look purposeful, more like they were just looking around.  I was kind of thinking that maybe the swarm had moved on to a better place.  I went back around 1:00 and Dad came out and we looked and watched and mulled and it seemed like it was a little more active.  It's supposed to rain all week, and we were debating on whether to do anything with it, or leave it till around Friday and let them get settled in.  We decided on leaving it as is for a few days.  I'll be off Friday and have lots of time.  I walked by the main hive on the way back to the house and the bees were buzzing very purposefully, many of them loaded down with pollen, which made me very happy.  I went back down around 4:00 pm a little while ago to check the swarm again (can you tell I'm really hopeful it works out ok?).  I had slid a q-tip with a little lemongrass oil into the entrance as a bait originally, and the bees were trying to get that thing out.  It was sticking about 1/2 way out of the entrance, so, being the smart, experienced beekeeper that I am, I thought, "I can get this little stick here and flick it out, and the bees will be very happy because they can get in and out so much easier!"  Well, I took the little stick and flicked the q-tip out of the entrance ok.  But just as soon as it did, POP!  right in the eyebrow.  Now, what kind of thanks is that!?   :'(   ;D

LOL... err.. OUCH!!!
Had one slam into me a couple days ago...   Winds at 22mph.. I was walking across the yard and SMAP right between the eyes..   the bee landed on my arm.. obviously minus a stinger..   she apparently hit so hard she stung.. I kinda felt bad as I  scraped the stinger out....
