Now I remember...
« on: April 12, 2015, 07:03:22 am »
.........why I buy my pollen patties pre-made.
Because of the long, tiresome, protracted, never-ending winter we have had this year, many are finding their hives on the very light side. Many of us are doing whatever we can to keep things afloat till nature kicks in. Nothing worse than getting colonies this far and then losing them.
I have been using fondant and am about to add pollen patties. I bought 2 cases (80 patties) and will probably begin today or tomorrow. Fondant has been hard to get as there has been a run on it (lots of keeps trying it for the first time) and there are back-orders. I decided to buy some Bee Pro and mix it with some honey that I have that I won't sell for human consumption (bottom of the bucket kind of stuff)
NOTE: only do this if you are certain of the source of the honey.
I had 10 lbs, of the Bee Pro and started adding it to some of the honey I had warmed up. I used my wife's pro mixer. I liked the idea of using up the honey this way rather than feeding it directly to the bees later.
What a mess! I remember first trying this many many years ago when I first started and now I distinctly remember why I started buying pre-made patties.
I don't know if my wife will let me use her mixer again. :-[

perry, you won't regret using the bee pro patties, it will go a long ways to helping them out.  i started buying the pre mixed stuff a few years ago, got tired of mixing up the stuff myself, it's a chore.  i stuffed some pre made bee pro with a shim on in late fall, i was concerned about the weight in the hive.
it was consumed. i place another half of a patty in just before easter, to cold to feed here, they had half a patty left. another check, that half was gone, and not out the front door. the hive was very light.  it was warm enough this past weekend to put syrup on, and this week temps for them to utilize the syrup, but left the remnants of the bee pro in, just in case.

i didn't add a pollen sub, i see lots coming in right now, but they may change (until i can take a closer look soon), for you it is a good choice to add.
