Cut out!
« on: April 16, 2015, 07:21:04 pm »
Did the first cut out of the year today.  In a house about 30 miles away in Ottumwa..  Eagle Eye Ted came to lend a hand, so things went quite well..  It was not an easy cut out compared to most...  but then, I didnt spend the day in a crawl space or on a ladder, so it could have been much worse..
Ted wasnt on his game today and missed the queen completely..  Thankfully I could tell he was just a little "off" so I was paying attention and nabbed her..
I  installed these bees into a nuc when I got home. Put syrup on them, and we will see how well they do.
I took Vid while there, but I have to edit it down to a manageable length before posting it to you tube...
So, it was a good day!!
Then Zweefer called, and we had a good talk while I was settling into my chair, Rum and coke in hand..  so now its a good day one better.  Looking forward to his visit!   I'll be out tomorrow in fact making him a queen or two or five....    ;D

Okay, so, let's set the "story" straight.  It was I that went into the crawl space first and yes, I did indeed, find the queen.  As everyone knows, Scott is really quite shy and introverted, lacking in self confidence.  Personally I believe this stems from deep rooted low self esteem issues.  Here's what REALLY happened.  I went up, found the queen, thought how much good it would do Scott to be able to say that he found her.  You know.  I was attempting to help bring him out of his shell.  The poor soul.

The cut out was a lot of fun!  It put me in mind of wrenching on duplex's with my dad and brothers.  It reminded me that you can't say for sure what's inside the walls of an older home until you open them up.  There should be a stud here, there's probably nothing there, I think the wires run the other way, etc.  Never having been involved in a cut out before I can't say if it was tougher than most or not but, I was tired when we left!  Ted

2 Someone has been watching too many JP videos!     ;D

I will see if I can sneak some time to do some editing tonight.

Okay, I can't take it any more.  I fibbed.  It was done in good fun but I don't think making exceptions for lying is for me.  Blaming stuff on Josh might be another matter.  But not in public.  Lazy did find the queen.  It was an amazing find too.  There he was, on his belly, with his head stuck where the floor and rafters meet, bees crawling all over, flash light in hand moving nasty old fiberglass insulation around, when he calmly calls out, "I found the queen!".  I mean really?  How does that even happen?  Did I mention we were almost done cleaning up and about ready to leave?  The last job was to vac up the final ball of bees in the attic/crawl space, and there she was.  Ted

   LOL  true...

I used Scott's Honey Bee Gone down below to drive the bees out of the space so I could seal it up..  But some of them had an exit route into the attic space...   Ted Vac's up the hoard of bees flying about outside the house, and then we seal it up with silicone..    It was Ted that decided we needed to go and look in the attic..   Yep, a big ball of bees hanging out in the corner of a rafter..
So, I do spot the queen.. crawling on some insulation with a few other bees..  I pull this out and slide it over to Ted, and point her out, and leave her in his safe keeping while I vac this ball of bees up...   I get that done..  and pull the hose out of the vac so the queen has no need to bounce down a hose...
   "Wheres the queen?
"I dunno, I was watching you!...  There she is!!"
She was attempting to fly, and doing a bad job of it.. I catch her, and put her over near the mouth of the bee vac...  FOOP..... stick the hose back on and vac up any strays...     We didnt take the camera up into the attic.. we are amateurs, but we will get better!
Maybe JP and Shawee will invite us down for a cut out and give us some pointers!
Still editing vid...   Had TWO rum and cokes last night and fell asleep in my chair....   Not that exciting, didnt talk to the camera much, just worked...

It's amazing that when doing cut-outs that the queen will usually be found on the last piece of comb. I've had the same thing happen were we didn't find her, went to pack up to go and was doing a final sweep and vac to pick up they strays, she suddenly appeared, by herself, coming out of a crack. I didn't even waste a second trying to grab her, she rode in the vac hose, I wasn't gonna let her give me the slip.
