Well, that was half a day I won't quickly get back. Just spent hours down at the emergency in Kentville. I was milling up pine for bottom boards and had a heck of a groove goin on. I was using a push stick with my right hand and I had an odd piece I was ripping that had a chunk missing out of it, and I was using my left hand to clear the off cuts. Without thinking I used my left hand to swipe away the off-cut but hit the spot where the wood was missing and put my thumb right into the blade.
As soon as I felt the tug I knew what happened.
Went into the house and had my wife drive me in. X-rays show I didn't hit bone but there was nothing left to stitch or do anything with. They put some dissolving web on it to try and stem the flow, I made a mess everywhere. Thumb is definitely going to be shorter than the other one. :-[
I'm home now, but will have to go back on Sunday for them to have another look. Don't know how I'm going to tie labels on my jars for a while now. :-\

Ooooooo Perry! A Big Bad Bummer for sure! DANG! Takes me back to when hubby was in his wood cutting groove, absent mindedly reached to pull a stick from the jammed chainsaw blade.... off to the emergency room...

At least you can still type :)

Feel for you Perry, lost part of my index finger at the first joint last week hitching a trailer up.  Kelly at the OT unit in Kentville is great and very gentle, if you need dressing changes or therapy.

Thanks folks. No therapy needed, nothing there to work with!
It's not all that bad, and could have been much worse.
To get an idea, hold up your thumb, go back from the tip to halfway down your nail, and remove! :o
It ain't gonna look pretty when it finally heals. ;D

Hey Bob, you're right. I wasn't there as long as I was expecting, and they treated me well. I left a pretty good mess outside the x-ray dept.  :-[

Oh geez Perry.  I'm so sorry.  As I was reading, I knew right where that story was going and cringing as I read.  I hope you have some pain medication, if you need it.  Are you right or left handed?
I cut the end of my index finger off at work about 5 years ago.  I was putting the finishing touches on dinner right before serving time.  I thought I would add some cooked bacon to the green beans.  Chop, chop, chop and the cutting board slipped.  I didn't loose as much as you though.
I was joking with the ER doctor and asked her if I would be able to play the violin again?  Can you believe it, she didn't know that old joke!

Perry, I too knew where this story was going and started to squirm.  My brother has done himself in twice with his woodworking tools.  The last time was bad, so the woodworking tools are hung up for good.  So much for that bookcase he was going to build me LOL.  Seriously, hope you heal quickly and take your pain meds!

Sure hate to hear that. That's why I buy my woodenware. I like my fingers, and have known too many wood workers with missing digits.

:D Hey Jack. When I was sitting down in the lobby waiting for the x-ray, I had my hand resting on my lap. What I hadn't noticed is the temporary bandaging they did in emerge was sopped through and I was bleeding all over my jeans, onto the chair and down onto the floor. Someone pointed it out to me!
Needless to say I think I freaked a few people out when my wife picked me up cause as I was walking out my jeans had a crotch full of blood all over them. :o

OUCH!!
Hope you get to feeling better real soon!
Worked in a custom cabinet shop for a short time and just barely stuck my thumb in the table saw blade one day after cutting trim for about two hours. Just felt really really warm all of a sudden and then red after that. It was just a nick, I had to quit and go do something else for a while.

Perry sounds like you lost alot of blood, Take care and not let it get infected buddy. I've been on some bad wrecks where it looked like a person had bled out, but actually only lost a pint or half pint of blood. One thing for sure, it will put a person into action to stop the bleeding. Jack

awww crap Perry...  That really sucks...    Well, the way I see it, I already lost one finger, so I should be able to keep on going without losing any more now. I went and used up the bad luck!  I have still managed to wound myself, but never as badly..
How did you miss the bone if you took off that much of the end of your thumb?  I have lost the tips of a couple fingers at different times, non woodworking related... they grew back well, but the nerves are not there. It feels a little tingly and numb when I touch those finger tips..   I have become accustomed to it, and compensate..  The hard part for me, is picking up a queen..  I cant tell how much pressure I am exerting and...  POP...     :'(
Been practicing with drones...  I'm not getting better yet..   :-[
