Just not normal.
« on: May 27, 2015, 08:52:45 am »
Did an inspection of the two week old swarm colony Saturday. Queen is doing her job well enough but not one drone in the hive nor any drone brood capped or other wise.
Apple, Pear, Wild Plum, and pear have bloomed still lots of Dandelions in bloom, the Russian Olive is in bloom and smelling so sweet out side and the wild thorn apples are just loaded with blooms.
Very little honey in the hive just looked pitiful so made up a gallon of syrup and they are taking it down.
Sure wish I knew what is going on, seems a 4 pound package size swarm on drawn comb would have a few frames of honey by now or at least more than a frame half full of honey. Maybe it has just been to dry for the blooms to have much in the way of nectar. Sat beside my strongest home colony for a hour and a half on Monday and never saw a drone there either.

How much brood do they have?
Thinking they may be putting everything they are getting back into the brood at this point?

The other thing is flow..  There have been times I "knew" we were having an excellent flow because of so many blooms, only to find out I had hives on the verge of starving...

Not saying either situation is their issue, just something to consider.

There was a good four frames of brood from just hatched milky c's to fully caped.

Ya I am thinking has been so dry maybe not much nectar to gather.

It takes a while before they'll start producing drone brood. A start or swarm generally doesn't want to have anything to do with drones. Anytime i make up nucs with drone brood in it, they'll pull them out and dump em.
It's not a honeybee, it's a honey bee. Whateveer!
