Ticks
« on: June 13, 2015, 10:00:10 am »
The ticks are bad in my area this year, they usually don't bother me much, but this year i think the bug spray has been a lure for them :o. I have one outyard in the woods that produce alot of honey, but when you come out of it your covered with the little blood suckers no matter what you do and they will hide in your truck for several days. I have friends and relatives that have almost died from tick bites and has effected there health ever since  ??? I pulled 4 off me last night and the no itch cream ain't working,so beware. Jack

Beware is right!  The other issue is people are being misdiagnosed.  My neighbor was told she had fibromyalgia for years.  Now they have concluded the Lyme is in her brain and she never had fibromyalgia.
What is even more unbelievable is there was a vaccine available but the two pharmaceutical companies that produced it stopped making it for humans because it was not profitable.....unbelievable.

I'll probably get into trouble for this (what's new :D), but i think the pharmaceutical co. needs Big brother to keep a closer eye on them 8). To many people are dying because of the power they have in the name of profit and greed, just like your saying Les. Jack

The only good thing about our imported fire ants, is that they have reduced the tick population to almost zero.  I have a tick on my body about twice a year.

We all have to remember that the only reason for a corporation to exist is to make a profit for its investors.  The government could guarantee a viable serum for lyme disease, but the "for profit" corporations are not going to do it.

You won't get into trouble talking about the pharm company's in front of me Jack and Les! I try and stay as natural as I can with medicines. I do still depend some on tylenol arthritis and naproxin on bad pain days. But my fav medicines are bees, acupuncture, tumeric, and some others.

My best example of misuse of prescription drugs was my poor mother in law. By the time she passed, she had a passle of presc bottles on her end table where she sat and sat and sat her life away. And, the docs couldn't find anything wrong with her...

I am planning on getting some guineas because they're supposed to love ticks.  I am also planning on getting some chickens because at the store yesterday I saw eggs for nearly $4/dozen.  That's outrageous!  I'm going to have to build a chicken coop/enclosure.

A sound idea Slow. We can now have chickens in town, for about 2 years now. I would like to have my own hens, but if the hens eat my lizards.... well, that's just not going to work...

If only i could train guineas to walk ahead of me in that beeyard? :D A young Mennonite has a 120 acre farm next to a outyard of mine, with 2 organic chicken houses and getting a loan for another one ( about $250.000.00 a piece), the chickens run outside come in and lay eggs in a covered tunnel with a conveyor that when he pushes a button the brown eggs come to him, he puts them in cartons and a cooler behind him. A semi. truck comes and loads them up and takes them to California. I don't know what they sell for out there, but i bet $4.00 would be a bargain out there. Jack

Okay  :)  if it's Cali, upper Cali's home grown eggs run from 3.50 - 5.00. But if it's southern Cali home ground eggs are prob more than that.

If you get guinea hens make sure your neighbors won't mind their call.  Ask Lindsay, she has been doing battle with her neighbor that moved up from the city.  I did the U.S. census in 2010 and was interviewing someone on their front porch when I heard this unearthly scream. I looked at the gentleman and said, "what the heck was that?".  He said, "guinea hens....we let them run around the neighborhood to eat the ticks".  Wish I could have them but my neighbors would not be pleased.

No problem here 1/4 mile is the closes neighbor and 1/2 mile SW of me is a hog farm and when they clean out the pens it takes three days for the air to clean up . I like to here the guineas out and about and if someone or something different comes around they let you know. Neighbors around here live and let live, it's the city folk that move in around that don't understand farm life and bring city values with them? Jack

Try using one of those sticky lint rollers, the ones with the tear off layers, after coming out of the woods.  You may not get them all but, that'll really reduce the number you carry home.

When we go out into tick country, we are clothed in full length jeans taped at the bottom, and long sleeve shirts all the way buttoned up and cuffs taped. When we come home, it's drop all the clothes in front of the washing machine and all clothes go in immediately, and then a very soapy shower  ;)

Neighbors?  What's that?   ;D

Actually, there's a marina with a bar about 1/4 mile from me and we can hear the band in our house with all the doors and windows closed.  I called the Sheriff's office and they said we don't have a noise ordinance and nothing can be done.  So I'm sure a few birds aren't going to bother anybody.

I am currently trying to purchase a small farm close to town.  It is only 57 acres, but it has a nice home and a well build CHICKEN house.  How do you train chickens to come back to the chicken house at night?
