Trap out at Old House
« on: July 03, 2015, 06:14:27 pm »
Started a trap out at an old Civil War house. Had caught a swarm at GFS next door a couple of years ago and did a huge cut out last year in a house up on the hill. This area has some bees in it for sure and will be a good place for a couple of swarm traps next year.

These gals had taken up residence in the window sill. A cut out was really not an option since the window had been trimmed out and painted.

All set up and ready to pull the rag out of the nuc with a frame of brood and eggs.

You can see GFS in the background.

The old house sits right in the middle of an expanding shopping center, home depot is just across the street.

Will check on them and report back. Best part is they are fairly close to the house and mot far from my daily travels.

That's some fine woodwork you got goin on right there. Do you do decks as well? ;D
I would never have been creative enough to figure out all that.
Looking forward to the updates. I have a cut-out or two lined up at some point. (when the swarming stops) :o :D

G3....That is some interesting ingenuity you have going on there.  I've never tried doing a trap out.  What are the chances that the queen will travel out through the funnel and into the nuc?

BTW.........I like your Morse code.   So true.  :D

The queen will exit the cone at some point when there are not enough bees and groceries left in the original hive. By the time she leaves there should be a new queen in the nuc already.

Thanks for the compliments on the wood work
Was trying to be the least invasive on the old house, just four small holes in the brick for the tap-con screws and a little silicone caulk that should peel right off.

Checked the bait hive yesterday and had five queen cells started.
I had put one frame of brood with eggs, pollen, honey and covered with bees in the bait hive
There are now two deep frames of bees and they are bringing in pollen and nectar.

This is a good start to a trap out.

Checked them again this morning and had a couple of capped queen cells.

I am going to call this day 8 of the queen cells, just an average since there are several that are capped and several that are not capped.

Should see some eggs by the end of the month.

Yes Ef they are shameless, but they just really want to work at keeping house.

Checked on the trap out today. I have a queen in the catch box and I really do believe it is the queen from the house. There is brood littering the screened cone where it was being drug out. Changed them over to a ten frame hive as they were needing the room also. Did not see any eggs but was WAY too HOT to be looking for eggs or larva. There was still some capped cells which should all be hatched out by Friday 7-24-15, anything after that will be from then new/old queen.
