Looks to me like that removal ruined a great method for keeping a water bill down. :o

Considering that it's rare for bees to hive underground, one might think that it wasn't there by accident----

He had the right Idea. Then you could of set your price for coming back and turning it back on for them. It was a nice small swarm it should turn in to a nice single to overwinter with little feeding being needed. No danger of working off a ladder. Hope you got the queen as not getting her sets the hives development back so far.

I got her.

She was reluctant to leave the water meter box until I gave it a squirt of bee gone into the box and out they came and her with them. Very very gentle bees.

I have a couple of queenless nucs I will combine with them and give her a hand.

Nice to hear you got her. queens are worth a few dollars and then the problems of tying to introduce them. Much easier when she has her own workers, brood and is actively laying.
most small colonies are gentle, It's when the develop to full size that we get to see there true temperament. but when you get a nasty colony that is still small some times your not looking forward to when it becomes a full size colony.

Curious.

I presume the water meter belonged to the water company. Did they pay for the cut out ?

I am surprised if the water company meter readers use cans of spray (POISON).

This could be a bad publicity bombshell for the water company.

Well.

I called 4 water companies today ti give them my name and number. They all gladly took it and said they would call.

One did say they have to exterminate whatever is in the box cause they have to be able to read the meter. But said they would try calling me. They are not going to pay anything over what it costs to buy a can of spray.

Now you will start getting calls for every wasp nest that is under a water meter lid.

We don't have any body to check the water meter any more they went reading them by satellite now, I don't know how they figure it would be cheaper that way, now more than 30 people loss their jobs because they did that. In cohots with the power company I guess.
