Mosquito Jacket, sea to simmit.
« on: July 16, 2015, 09:24:49 am »
Mosquitos got terrible here about mid June to the point they have made the news warning about West Nile. I put up with them for a while but finally gave in to bathing in repellant. That crap tasted GAWD AWFUL but if you didn't get it on your lips that is where the mosquitos would feed as well as the deer flies. Finally broke down after Kare nagging on me about getting West Nile and bought a jacket.

I have had my Jacket a week now. I use it every day when walking Lily in the woods and field. Yes it is a bit warmer than just wearing a t shirt and jeans but well worth the heat when I can stick my lounge out at Skeeters and yellow jackets even. Yes I was wearing it when I was stringing electric fence wire thru an area and hit a nest of yellow jackets. NO STING got thru to my body.

I was wearing a bonnie hat under the hood to keep the net away from my face and neck but that hat is not a good one to allow heat to escape from ones head. I changed to a mesh Ball type cap which has brought up what to me is a problem. The head net slides forward so much a couple of seams get in the line of vision. I think it is the weight of the zipper for the head net that causes that. So if you get one with out the zipper you may not have a problem. I plan to solve the problem with a Velcro patch on the hat and the other part on the head net.

I wear it walking lily, stringing electric fence wire and driving post, while trimming dead limbs from trees and splitting some fire wood I was stacking.

Is so nice not to have to take a bath in repellant to keep from getting bit, don't have to endure the smell or get bite on the lips cause they didn't have that crap on them.

One problem is when the sun is low in the sky in the evening the net reflects light in to your eyes but sun glasses fixes that and really you should wear them in the sun any way.

That's great Al.  Anything would be better than drenching your self in Deet.

Just saying and I don't want to kill every little tiny critter on the earth either. Mosquitoes and deer flies I could care less about.

Alley I don't blame you for not wanting to use that mosquito spray.   I have been hearing rumors that Johnson & Johnson's baby lotion is working as a repellant.  I think I'll give it a try because I am a mosquito magnet and I too can't stand the regular skeeter sprays.   We can sit on the deck at night and not one single skeeter will bother Ken and I have them buzzing all around me.  As I write this,  I am nursing a spot where I got tagged on the back of the neck six times the other night.  Geez, it is getting so we are paranoid to go outside between worrying about West Nile Virus and Lyme disease!  Nah, just kidding......the winter is too long, I relish being outdoors.

I love late fall after a good killing frost and winter with the snow and cold bugs don't like. No matter how cold it is out side I can put another layer on and enjoy the out doors and no bugs.

Mosquito's never bothered my uncle and i (when he was alive) working in the garden or on fishing trips. We drank so much beer that they would get drunk and fall off of us. Jack

No Michigan doesn't suit me. To hot and humid in the summer with the biteing bugs. I need some thing in the 40 and 50F range perment.

Alley, is you find such a place, let me know.  I too cannot tolerate the humidity and the heat.  We are in the 90's here all week with humidity to match.

Well my finding is you need to be rich and be able to afford two homes. One in the northern part of the northern hemisphere like up around Hudson bay. then another place in the southern hemisphere like maybe chile near the mountains.

Many years ago coonhunters and night fisherman around here started using Avon Skin-So-Soft and it worked pretty well. Don't know if its still available or the same formula but if it is I recommend trying it.
