To my non-facebook friends
« on: July 23, 2015, 02:22:50 pm »
I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook while applying the
same principles. Therefore every day, I go to the street and tell a
passerby what I have eaten, how I feel, what I have done the night
before and what I will do after. I give them pictures of my wife, my
daughter, my dog, and me gardening and spending time in my pool.
I also listen to their conversations and tell them I love them.
And it works: I already have three people following me:
two police officers and a psychiatrist.
“Listen to the mustn'ts, child. Listen to the don'ts. Listen to the shouldn'ts, the impossibles, the won'ts. Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me... Anything can happen, child. Anything can be.”
― Shel Silverstein

And another 2 stalking you, one behind the shed trying to copy your every move, and another behind a tree waiting for you to leave so to rob you.

Every time I get a request to check up on something in Facebook and my attempt to do so is blocked because I don't have an account, I thank God for saving me from the curse.

LOL!!!

I had facebook, but didnt post a lot on it.. It was nice to keep in touch with friends and relatives in far away places...  then My son went to Afghanistan, and they got real testy with me.. I finally got ticked off and told them off.. my son is over there fighting for YOU, and your giving me grief about communicating with someone over there? How many military families are talking with their sons, daughters, fathers and mothers that are there right now?
Next day they sent me a message, saying they wanted copies of my drivers license, Social security card, and proof of residence, a photocopy of a electric or water bill with my name and address would be sufficient..  until I sent those things I was blocked and banned...
So be it, havent been back on facebook since...

I just borrowed a few hundred grand and didn't have to give up this much information to my banker.  I guess a retina scan and personal search was next.  Do you wonder what a clever computer hacked could do with this much information?

I agree with Ef that being on Facebook is a curse I can do without.  One of my consulting jobs this spring was in an electric power plant.  They were very strict on cell phone usage and told us many times that anyone taking a picture would be banned from the plant permanently.  I one time ask a supervisor why they were so strict to cell phones.  The story line is that a few years back there was an accident on the plant that killed two employees.  The names of the deceased were published on Facebook before the plant could go through the necessary, legal requirement and notify their next of kin.

Oh don't get me started on face book and family.
I think we finally joined the computer commination  world in 2000. with a EMail address I still use today. One sister Sends a Email about every 6 months to see if I am alive enough to reply. Brother sends me one more often but still not like I am told the face book bunch do.
I have seen my daughter check and up date several times a day.

At one time you could send a E mail to a news reporter to make a comment on a story. That seems to have changed. I filled out some questions on what I thought was a news stations forms to make comments.
Next day I had in my E mail in box a request from a old school mate I barely knew then and had totally forgotten by that day, One from a guy who farmed near my folks and worked in the bank we used and went off to be a politician in Lansing, A young lady who may or may not be a relation with the same spelling of my last name living in Florida, two of my sisters, a nephew and two nieces and my brother. All want to be my friend yet find it hard to send me an E mail or call me on the phone. They all can KMA.
I do not do face book and no longer make comments on news stories.

Alleyyooper says: "....Next day I had in my E mail in box a request from and...and...and...

You are making a very broad "hint" at one of the other big curses of the internet---you can never know what response you wrote or ad you checked out or...or...or... that brings in its' wake a thousand garbage mails of all sorts.  And they expand over and over and, for me they've reached the point wher my junk mail overpowers my legitimate mail tenfold.  Not all of it is sorted out accurately by service providers and you end up wasting hours and hours of time eliminating stacks of junk mail.  I could go on and on with this abhorent topic, but I would justifiably be accused of hijacking this thread.
Iddee's message is so funny because it is so "true to life" that it almost hurts.

My E Mail has a block sender function. Works great. After 15 years not much gets thru any longer.

I use facebook quite a bit.  I'd rather stay in touch with old friends in this very peripheral way than not at all.  Most of my university friends have moved away and it's nice to kind of keep track of their lives with a few pictures now and then.   I post about a dozen pictures from my life every year, and most of my friends do about the same.
My advice: worth price charged :)

Facebook can certainly be a big waste of time if not used correctly. I follow quite a few beekeepers on facebook and it is a good source of learning in that respect. Just like everything, moderation people. :)
