I saw this idea on tv and thought I would give it a try.  Oyster shells were recommended, but I used what I had on hand.  Those of you that live near the ocean might find this an easy product to add to your farmer's market booths or crafts booths.  Something that isn't easily tipped over is important.  Maybe that's why an oyster shell was recommended.  I don't have any experience with oysters.


I have a bunch of tea lights, so I used the wick from tea lights.  I melted bees wax and some scented wax from another project, placed the wicks in place and piped in the melted wax.  The scented wax was also tinted, thus the off colored wax.  I think in the future I will do plain bees wax.  Super easy and has a summer feel.

The wick for bees wax tea lights is different than the one used for soya and paraffin wax. because you mixed your wax you may be OK bet you will need to use the proper wick if pure beeswax is used. Nice idea though, they look good.

Didn't want you to make a 100 of them and then have to start again. Perry ran into the wick problem and can put you on to the right stuff.

Nice! I've got some nice seashells for this project, some real big ones too. I light candles a lot in the winter, now ya got me thinkin'

apis, you are correct.  I didn't get a great burn using those wicks.  I will melt the wax and start over. 

Perry, if you read this, what wicks do you have success with?  I tried a search of the forum, but didn't have any luck finding the thread.

bakers, neat idea!

i use square cotton braiding #4/0 for tealights. it should work in those shells.

Just saw this now. :-[
I buy the tea light pre-wicked tabs, they come in 3 different thicknesses due to the different burning tendencies of beeswax's (dark, medium and light).
