Fingers crossed for this swarm.
« on: August 03, 2015, 05:09:34 am »
So I have been called to get this swarm half an hour drive away. They where in the 5 frame nuc in 30 mins, and in the bee yard the morning after. At collection time I have been unable to locate the queen though.
Knowing that a new swarm is one hades of a wax production machine I left them to it for 1 week a had a peep in the box 2 days ago.
They did pull a couple of frames from the foundation I gave them but I had also noticed about a dozen dispersed, half built emergency cells. Gave them another good look but no queen and no eggs, so I assumed that she was not there.

I gave them a frame from a frame of brood, eggs and larvae...now hoping for the best.

Swarms can draw massive amounts of comb if they have the fuel necessary. If you don't have a flow on, you should consider feeding. When I hive a swarm I usually stick a full frame of honey in there as a boost to get them going.
If this swarm fit into a nuc it sounds very much like an afterswarm. As far as a (virgin) queen goes, they can be hard as heck to spot, at times almost impossible. They can hide on the floor, walls, they run from frame to frame.
I went to shake out a nuc that I had given up on yesterday only to find a frame covered in eggs.

I am feeding them Perry. But they wouldn't start emergency cells with a virgin queen won't they?

Not likely. If they are calm and quiet the odds are there is a virgin in there.
