Catalpa Bee Tree Trap Out
« on: August 18, 2015, 08:19:14 pm »
Robo was kind enough to walk me though my first trap out to save a colony of bees from being sprayed and exterminated. Here's a few pics... Also the frame of brood was laid by the supercedure queen they raised from a frame of eggs we gave them in the Nuc box

looks like they did a good job on drawing out a queen nice brood patten. and thanks to you mentor for taking the time to guild you through it. You learn so much when you get to work with old time beekeepers. I still learn new things every time I get to work with the more experienced.

Leslie, we did this trap out probably 3 weeks before August.. It was in Stone Ridge..
Jack, I've heard a lot of talk about the bees working catalpa here but I have not witnessed it myself. I do not have any on my property but I do down the road, I'll have to take a walk down next year when they are in bloom. I wonder why the honeybees don't forage on it anymore by you.. Must be a stronger flow of something else they like when the catalpa is in bloom where you are. The bumblebees have fascinated me this year, they work everything!

The queen hibernates through the winter so excess nectar is not needed to be gathered and stored. The percentage of pollen gathering is equal to nectar. In fact unlike the honey bee the bumble bee will gather both nectar and pollen on the same trip.

Just some of the useless facts that are stuck in my brain. But i am fascinated by bumble bees, paper wasps, mason bees, and butterfly's. Most of my trivia knowledge I picked up before the age of the internet.

Do you mean to say that  the internet hasn't been with us since the dawn of time?   ;D
