First swarm
« on: September 02, 2015, 05:16:05 pm »
I received a call from a friend of mine who told me he had a swarm on his LP tank.
This is what I found

Got the queen in the Nuc and buttoned up in prep for the rain.  Will go back tomorrow and screen it in and take it home.

Accommodating bees! Didn't need a ladder. Good work zweef.
Are you going to do a combine with an already established hive to winter them?

Nice and spread out, would have made finding the queen easier for sure. Well done!

Went out to get to the kids on the bus this morning, and noticed as I was walking past that the lid had shifted on the nuc. Normally not a big deal, but it has been raining since midnight last night. I know bees are hardier than we give them credit for, but do you think having rain drip in for 8+ hours will demoralize them to the point they want to leave again?

I doubt it. Bees are pretty amazing and adaptable.

Yeah, they seemed fine when I got home from work. Sad thing is, the hive I was going to combine them with has exploded after their OA treatment... Flow is still strong here - wondering if I combine or try to keep them as a double nuc...

err, hmmm...  they might have time to get another round of brood out, so long as they dont try to supersede the queen...   it will take some feeding NOW to get them ready!

I'll just combine with the previously weak hive.  I peeked in today, and they have barely drawn two frames...
