Welcome to the forum. I don't know whether getting completely hooked... is a good thing or a curse. starting beekeeping pn Germany, the type of hive you started with could be something different than the standard 10 frame Langstroth that is mostly used in North America.

Yes it is a bit different. It is called a Duetsche Normal (German Normal) and it holds 12 frames instead of ten., other than that it seems to be very similar.

Welcome aboard.  It will be educational to hear of beekeeping adventures in Germany.  Twelve frames, yuk, those dang Germans must be strong.  I've gone to eight frames and they are heavy.

So is your hive square so you can rotate the brood boxes 90 degrees for winter so the frames are across ways from the entrance. Do you only use 1 brod chamber?

Winters are usually not too bad, it snows but not a lot. Summers are great with just enough rain to keep everything green.

Welcome, TD. It's been 45 years since I was in K-town. I imagine it has change quite a bit since then. Is Vogelweh still the American shopping center and living quarters?

Yes it is changing. K-Town just built a big American style mall downtown. There is still housing on Vogelweh, but most of the shopping (BX) is now on Ramstein.

No, they are not square.With that many frames it is more like a rectangle. Right now I only have 1 Brood Chamber.

and a big HOWDY from central Texas and if you are from Texas then you are quite likely to know exactly what the HOWDY implies?

how deep are the frames you are using?  casually looking at your picture there use to be similar 12 frame hives here that were called Jumbos.  a true Jumbo had frames that were almost a foot deep and a Modified Jumbo was a cut down version of the true Jumbo using standard 9 and 5/8 inch deep frames.  I saw of few of the modified Jumbos in use here back in the 80' when I was employed by a commercial bee keeper.  the ones here had queen excluders to fit the 12 frame size and basically the deep bottom box was brood chamber and food chamber combined and everything above the excluder was considered surplus for the beekeeper to take.

I am all ears to hear of your experience in Germany.
