A new truck?
« on: October 26, 2015, 04:10:35 pm »
My faithful old truck is almost new. ;D
Last year I had to make the decision to either replace the motor or park her and find another truck. I am the second owner and I love the truck, so I made the decision to keep her. I replaced the motor with a low mile engine and had to replace the master brake cylinder, some brake lines, and the y pipe on the exhaust. I figured it was cheaper than payments on a new one so I did it.
This year so far:
Brand new radiator.
Just replaced the gas tank as it sprung a leak (rust) and had the truck undercoated again.
Tomorrow it goes in for a brand new set of tires.
 :eusa_wall:  ;D  :D
It is up for inspection in November and then I am good for another 2 years. (all vehicles in Nova Scotia must pass a safety inspection every 2 years). By the time I have to get another inspection done I will have to do some body work as the front fenders, cab corners and rockers are getting a little thin, but I found that those parts are still available aftermarket and are quite cheap.
Tonight I just finished putting the canopy back on for the winter but I have to say I loved having that thing off for the season.

That is what I did for my 1997 chev pickup, a new 2010 motor block, the old motor had a burn up rod bearing, rebuilt transmission and new set of tires 4 years ago, not better gas mileage but still runs like a top.

Yes, mine only cost me 1400 dollars, so that was a lot cheaper, in fact the tires almost cost more than the motor and the cost of the transmission.

I've said it before.. Perry if you were closer I'd help you fix that truck up. Worked for GM as their truck Mech up until around 92, so isnt much I cant do to them...

I JUST pulled the cab and flatbed off my dually yesterday..  THe Dually, Betty, and about 3 grand are all about to become one..   I have to have a dependable truck to haul bees to Maine, so its getting overhauled from the ground up.
The 489 is getting removed... it was GREAT for pulling stumps but at about 7 mpg I dont think it will do well on a 2400 mile round trip... so the roller cam 350 in Betty will be used with the newly rebuilt 700R4... not as much torque, but it gets closer to 18mpg out on the interstate...
Going to coat the frame and start from the ground up. Already has new tires on the dually so.. Stainless steel break lines and hoses, new hub bearings, all new front end parts, new gas tank and fuel pump, etc, etc...   I'll keep the TBI in it.. I really love the TBI fuel injection system... a lot of guys dont like them because they limit out at around 4K rpm...   works good in a truck meant for towing though. A Harris chip and minor mods will see it close to 300 HP and still get good mpg comparatively.
Headed up there to work on it right now in fact...

Put the wrong price down on what I payed to get the truck  fix, should have been 3400 dollars instead of 1400, know all though how did he get it so cheap.

Had to either buy a body for my 1975 chevy or address the rust issues NOW on it, after sand set in the bed and got rained on in May.  Cost to move my engine and trans to a new body (not to mention everything from my new brakelines brakes alternator starter etc etc  was well over $2000.
so I spent that $2000 getting it sanded, rust converter applied to stop the eating away and primer'ed, will go back for paint when my customers are covered and body shop has time, probably January. And I got bedliner applied.

3.5 weeks without the truck about  killed me but my body guy is trying to retire and he had little repairs coming in daily too...Grateful he stayed in business long enough to do the work.
