Todays farm market.

I changed things up a bit at the market today and reduced the amount of honey actually on display, and separated the liquid from the creamed honey. I also put out more candles including the fancy ones my wife has started to make again. End result was decent, around $200 in honey and $190 in candle sales.

Rockin' It Perry ~ I love the fat pillar candles, the flame will burn down below the walls of the pillar and makes the candles more glowy  :)

Thanks. I wish the table spaces were larger cause I could do sooooo much more as far as displays go. The table space you see in the pic, and that's just the table and maybe 3 feet behind it, cost me $50 a week! Back in Lunenburg the areas were much bigger and I could set up a hive and maybe even my small extractor and all sorts of things to draw folks in.

Hey Perry, I took a gander at your display, and your comments on not very much room. Have you thought about going up? for example...like build a structure that has 1 x8's side by side, on each end of the table, going up. Then 2 1x8 going across and attaching to the 1x8's going up on the sides. You could hang your tapers on that structure, and you could add an extra shelf at the top for whatever

Or even a PVC pipe structure which would be more transportable?

Great display Perry!  A lot of choices to see and consider.  Any way you can simplify the customer's choice will pay dividends.  Nice job, I will make some of those honey jar displays before next year, thanks for sharing.  :-)

They are coated with something alright, and they may indeed be laminated. I went this route for 3 reasons really.
# 1 -  Everyone who buys a jar ends up with one of my business cards!  :laugh: they are two sided with stuff on both sides.

# 2 - I get a lot of people who bring back the jars, and I can reuse the jars but not the lids. Labels stuck on jars are a royal pain to get off.
# 3 - It really gives the jars a personal/ artisnal touch. I mention on my website that every jar passes through my hands, and it's absolutely true, I have to tie each one on by hand! ;D

Your display is very nice, your product is impeccable.  I'm surprised you only sold what you did.  I used to sell stuff at crafts fairs (wood working gifts like spoons and candle holders) and I always sold $600 to $1000.
Doesn't seem worth it to me to sit there all day for $200 in profit, but maybe I'm just spoiled from the construction industry.

When I was going to UBC, there was a bee keeper who'd come down for a week shortly before christmas and set up in a parking lot near the golf course.  He had a 5 tonne cube van, that was full of honey, by the end of the week it would be empty.  Now that's my kind of business model.

I love Farmer's markets.  In my little town of De Leon, our Farmer's market is seasonal.  I regret that.  When we lived in Weatherford the Farmer's market consisted of two large metal buildings, and it was open all through the year.  I really miss it, as I like to shop fresh, homegrown products and buy from local people.  I knew many of the vendors, at least by reputation in Weatherford, and I like the thought of putting my money into people that I know pockets.

Your not going to get rich selling at farmers markets :no:, but you can get something for your hard work. My wife says, the only reason we do it is to see friends and neighbors, and meet new comers to our area, She also tells people the only reason i show up, is to fuss and fight with the older women that show up :laugh:, You would be surprised at some of the bad words these sweet old church going ladies know and say :laugh: :laugh:, But we have fun. Jack

You went to UBC and still decided to get into beekeeping? Didn't they teach you anything? ;D

Removing Labels from Honey Jars

With my current labels, I use a single edge razor blade to peel off the dry label. Any residual adhesive comes off with warm soapy water and a scouring pad.

In the past, with another adhesive, I kept the label dry and filled the jar with hot water. Once the label was warmed it could be peeled off.
