Thank you Boston!
« on: December 22, 2015, 12:10:16 pm »
I don't know how many folks are aware of the connection between Boston and Nova Scotia? Back in 1917 two ships collided in Halifax Harbour, one of which was loaded with munitions (WWI). The explosion that occurred was the largest explosion in the world at that time. It literally wiped out Halifax, the devastation was almost complete. Hospitals were wiped out as were many of the folks that staffed them. Boston stepped up to the plate and immediately sent supplies and Drs. and nurses to aid in the recovery. Each year since, Nova Scotia has sent (free of course) the large Christmas tree to the city of Boston in gratitude. It is a tradition that has carried on and it has become something of an honour here to have one of your trees chosen as "the tree".

There is actually a movie that was made titled (of course) Shattered City - The Halifax Explosion! Many of the scenes were shot in Lunenburg when we first moved there and Jane and I ended up being extras on the set. I was an army officer and Jane was a woman shopping near the wharves. I will see if I can find a picture we have of us in character.

At 23 seconds in, Jane is just off to the left of the main character, wearing a black hat with gold trim.

It really warms the heart when you come across one community that remembers its' debt to another on the "long term".
This is really a special event.    :) .
I wouldn't be surprised some day to hear about the tree coming from your property, Perry.
