I hate wishing for bees to die, but in this case, I hope they get enough stings to send them to the hospital.

Gotta get a branding iron.  It's too easy to paint over and hide superficial markings on the hives.

I keep a close eye on my hives. I hope somebody can come up with a cheap chip soon, to put in our hives, If stolen. let the police do the rest. I believe people that steal somebody else  hives have to know something about beekeeping. Average people off the street have no idea how to move a bee hive.

Ray, they exist---and are not that unthinkable a solution.  Take a look at this link for example: www.rfidjournal.com.
RFID chips can be inserted inside a drilled hole in the hive's woodwork and covered over with a sealer and hidden by  paint.
Even the "cost barrier" is not that serious.  A stolen hive with a hidden RFID chip could be "read" by the police and serve as proof to wwho the real owner is.  Maybe, some day,  beekeepers will use them as a matter of course.
Google "RFID chips" or "RFID identification",  "RFID chip cost"  or any similar wording and you might be on your way to solving a serious problem for beekeepers worldwide!!!

I like the branding iron idea from Ef. But a chip is a wonderful idea! If I had hives outside my yard, I think I would do that.

If hives are stolen in the winter, it does make sense that it sure might be other beekeepers. However, I'm also thinking that these hives may have been stolen for the honey, without consideration or knowledge, or maybe they don't care, of what happens to the bees being knocked around while being stolen.

It's easy for some low lives to steal when they think it's a faceless entity with deep pockets and the stolen item won't be missed.  The company logo on the hive bodies might have been the silent permission in the thieves' mind.  I doubt that anyone belonging to this forum would ever do such a thing.  I think most of us would find time to go help a fellow beekeeper if they needed it.  We belong to a small group of nurturing, caring, nature loving people.  O:-)

On the other hand, and I don't intend to start a discussion off the topic, I watched a crime program on MSNBC the other night that has left me haunted.  I won't go into detail, because this guy's crimes were horrendous.  But he was a beekeeper and the police were exploring his out yards for clues to a missing girl.  I shuttered when they showed an old picture of him holding a frame of honey.  Later they showed pictures of him suited up working his hives.  The police did find what they were looking for in an area he had scouted as a potential out yard.  Sadly, just because we share the same passion doesn't make us all good people.

Growing up in farm country where people looked out for each other, then getting a job as a Mo. State Water Patrolman, then a Springfield, Mo Fire fighter, gave me a quick education on the unbelievable things people can and do to others. :o.I joined the service in 1956, but never went to a war zone, the Korean war was waning down and our boys were coming home, they had some sad stories to tell .Out of over 200 club members we have now, and many old beekeepers that are no longer with us, i have only heard one member claim that another member stole hives from him, but was never proven. Jack

Don't you folks have a Boxing Day in the states? :o
It is the day after Christmas, and is very much like your Black Friday, the biggest sales day of the year for the most part.

I've got a hive I wish they'd steal. They wouldn't do that again.

Hi rcannon, I had a hot one in late spring as well, first time I've ever had a hive like that.
