Chased burglars out of the house

I found a couple of young burglars in my house on Sunday afternoon.

Picture the scene of me following them down the street yelling "Thieves" .... "Robbers" and the like. Usual scenario .... no one around when needed. Got the car reg and their description but they were using false plates  .... bummer. At the moment the police trail is cold.
 
Trouble is I am now going through the stage of thinking in quiet moments  " I should have done this or that"

Sorry to burden the members. This post is one way (I hope) to help ease my mind.

I know how you feel.  While my late uncle's home was uninhabited thieve came by and piled up a bunch of stuff (crosscut saws, ice tongs, hay saws and such).  We put everything back and screwed all the shed door shut with torx head screws.  A week later they came back and busted into a couple of the buildings.  At some point they came back and stole a Farmall H tractor in broad daylight.  Oh, how I'd love to get my hands on those people.

Barbarian, sorry to hear your news...At the same time you didn't report any violence against you or your family, glad there was no news like that.  You are a brave man to chase them down the street.

  Sounds like a normal phase of dealing with the shock and disappointment you have just gone through.  I'm a ruminator too.  Reading your story prods me to look at our home security...We are very security minded, it's a pain sometimes.

Don't blame you for venting. Life is hard enough for us humans without other humans making it harder. You likely couldn't have done any better than you did. A panicked thug can be very dangerous.

Sorry to hear about your problem, it's good to hear nobody was hurt. I would think with a name like Barbarian, they would of thought twice about coming to your home. :yes: Jack

Hey Barbarian! I am one to go into full charge when justice needs to be served. Like Retroguy said, often times burglers will strike the same place again. I would be putting up and electronic eye for the next time they feel the need to, keep it a secret, hide it well, tell no neighbors. Nab those sob's ~

Yes Jack, I was thinking about 'thinking twice,' but wanted to be sensitive to England's stand on firearms...

I like my guns for what they don't do.

I lived in a bad neighborhood for 25 years. One day, one of the local hooligans was there as I was locking my garage. I said to him, "I hope nobody wants my stuff bad enough to break my locks".
Hr replied, "Nobody's gonna bother your stuff, Wally. They know you will shoot their A**".

That's the best use ever for a gun. Prevention, not cure.

if somebody walks into your house with no gun and you shoot him you go to jail. Be careful how you use your gun. Its better to beat him with a pipe or use a good dog on him.

In my case, being female, it would be easier to use the gun simply because females don't have the brute strength to beat up a perpetrator with a pipe, although I wouldn't hesitate to give it a good attempt if that's all I had at hand.

  In that situation, you'd better be ready to explain under oath why you didn't stop hitting them when they were no longer a threat, and before they died...there are no winners when you are forced to defend yourself or your family. 

But, there are certain measures that are a deterrent to these kind of people, and some of the best go "click" then "bang."  True in the neighborhood, and on the world stage.  :-)

Barbarian, it sounds like discretion was the better part of valor in your case.  True in Shakespeare's time & today.  :-)

You're right, Ray, but having a reputation can keep you from having to shoot. I'm 70 years old, and have never had to pull the trigger yet, but having one has saved me numerous times. Likely many more times than I know about, since prevention is not normally seen.

I have a security system, 350 lbs of dogs, none are chihuahuas, used to have a sword by the front door but my baseball bat is still there, cameras on the porch, and as for anything else, a stolen firearm can kill the wrong people. I am a fair shot however, and have borrowed an AR15 when I had a psycho in a truck trying to run me over (he has since suicided in jail, he really was mentally ill)  I did learn to fire the 15 but was glad it was just at targets

Hi gang.

Thanks for the good wishes and thoughts. Just as I expected from this friendly forum.

I am thinking of increasing the visible security presence. We have a culture of traveling career crooks so I rather fancy making them think of finding an easier target.

That is a great plan Barbarian, enough security to move the crooks on to another target, and leave you alone.  Still, glad you are safe!

We get those young traveling career crooks in our neighborhood as well. I ignore the doorbell, or once in awhile they catch me off guard. I nicely say no thank you and close the door. Tho one evening, on a cold winters night, hubby answered the door to of these wayfarers, he said "Oh! It's so cold tonight! step inside the door and warm up". I am by no means a cold hearted person, but I just about had a nut right there! I stepped up quickly to the entryway and kept her there until she left. Needless to say hubby and I had a talk.

It's been a long time since I lived in town and had pedestrian traffic, but this day and time, I would not let anyone in my house that I did not know well.  On two occasions someone has broken into my vehicle and stolen something.  I agree with the above poster in that you just seem violated when someone takes your belongings.  Stealing is a terrible thing.

Breaking into one's home is a worse thing.  I would not shoot someone that was stealing, but if I find someone in my house and have one of my pistols handy, I will tell them to leave, but in that case I would not hesitate to shoot and when the shooting starts it only makes sense to shoot to kill.  It's not something that I would want to do, but it is what I would do.
