A tribute...
« on: January 27, 2016, 06:44:22 pm »
A while back I posted a thread about a deal I got on a bunch of frames from the other end of the valley. These frames were made by William Gillighan, who passed away roughly 10 years ago. His daughter decided to sell off things stored in the attic, and boxes of frame parts were among the items. I ended up buying enough frame pieces to build around 900 frames. About the only thing missing were enough bottom bars, with less then half the amount needed  being there. No problem, I made a bunch of those as they were fairly easy to make. I am nearing the end of my adventure with these frames.
What is amazing to me is that he made all of these frame pieces himself, and they were made and put in boxes back in 1970! These frames are 45 years old, and a true testament to the time and care that he put into them. Are they perfect? No, most of the bottom bars that he made were the split type and required more work than I like when assembling. The top bars are wedge type, some of the wood needed a minor whittle here or there, but on the whole they were very good.
In one of the boxes when I opened it, was a copy of a long since closed farm magazine with the 1970 date on it, pretty cool!
We all like to hope we make a mark in this life, and that at some point someone will speak kindly of us. This was my opportunity to say "Thanks Mr. Gillighan", I did not ever meet you but I do know something about you! ;)

Nice bit of kit, Perry.

Curious ..... How do you insert a sheet of foundation in such a frame ?  Up through the bottom bars or flexed and down through the bottom bars ?

These frames were all made with a wedge type top bar, so really the foundation could go in either way. I assume with the split bottom bar it was probably the way it was done. I just lay my plastic foundation into the slot of the bottom bar and then just lay the plastic in and then insert the wedge. Pretty simple. While the frames were not the type I would normally purchase, at about 30 to 35 cents a frame it was definitely worth my while.

His daughter deserves a link to your comments.  I'm sure it would renew memories for her andmake her feel proud of her industrious dad.
