Choir music

For those that might be interested.
My 14 yr old son is in the Annapolis Valley Honour Choir which has just arrived in Cuba last night for a cultural exchange. They will be performing most days as well as distributing musical instruments, clothing, etc. to many of the smaller and disadvantaged areas of Cuba.
Prior to my son singing, I had never heard a choir, but now I am hooked. The talent and concentration shown by these "kids" is astonishing. They are an incredibly tight knit group of some of the finest young people you would hope to meet.
Here are just a few of their performances, some of which were recorded in less than ideal circumstances but you get the idea.

The first is a short Russian song that is very difficult to do (Most of their songs are in languages other than English by the way )


This one is a very softly sung song, you may have to turn volume up to hear it properly.


This one has the younger kids as well that flew in for a week from British Columbia. This song was written by a Nova Scotian about Nova Scotians.

I enjoy hearing and singing acapella.  Psychologists report that relationships gained through singing together are some of the strongest we make as humans.  I used to play in the band, (elementary, middle high school and college), But enjoyed the choir most in high school and college....More girls there.  Enjoyed the songs Perry, thank you!

Heather Fraser is the head of the choir, and she is simply amazing. She is very passionate, and focus is probably her middle name. You must audition to get in, and many do not. She is very strict but believes it must also be fun. If you watch the choristers they will seldom take their eyes off her at any point. I have seen her stare when there is something distracting going on and it usually stops instantaneously ( ). She is demanding but also adored by every chorister with out doubt. After this Cuba tour they will begin preparing and fundraising (every chorister must participate) for 2018 and a trip to Estonia!

I know a little about that 'stare'. When I was in high school, I tried out, and was choosen to be a part of a madrigal choir. It was 12 of the best singers in the high school choir, 3 bass, 3 tenor, 3 alto, 3 soprano. I loved that madrigal choir So Much! My heart skips a beat when I see your young folks singing so beautifully. Our high school would travel to other high schools and compete, our high school was one of the best, and our madrigal choir won first place at one of those competitions, I will never forget that day.

Our music teacher, Stan Fields, was a real hip guy, and we all loved him. He let us sing what ever we requested whether modern rock, or classic, or western. It was the early 70's and he started letting his hair grow. There was much controversy about that amongst the faculty. Long story short, when his hair reached his shoulders they gave him the option of cutting his hair or 'move along'. Even the local newpaper got involved and interviewed him. He said "My hair isn't what is teaching these kids to sing!" But alas, he was asked to leave. Sad sad day when he packed up and walked out. But he did have the heart felt courtesy to have a long talk with his choir and band members, saying, "Sometimes we may loose, but we have to stand up for what we believe"

Most impressive.!  I too was a chorister for many years.  My last choral performance was as a member of the Northwestern University chorus, perfoming Arthur Honneger's "King David".  That was in 1961.  Since then my voice has aged considerably, not improving as does wine, but my appreciation of music has never declined in the least. 

Could you try to point out which one of the boys in the choir is your son.  And don't just say "the handsome one", that is obvious, but, lest there be a few handsome boys, tell us where he is standing in which performance.

He is in the very front row, furthest to the right. At 153 minutes there is a close up of the kids.



Also, here is a pic of the send off just before loading onto the bus taking them to the airport for Cuba. (2nd from the left).
Just starting to realize how outnumbered the guys are compared to the girls, should have tried the choir myself when I was younger.

The neighbor said something about raising girls was easier When  My great grandfather informed him that he only had to worry about his 4 sons, but that he had to worry about his 4 daughters as well as his 4 sons.

Call of the ocean was my favorite music.  Your son is such a handsome young man, and with his God given abilities should go far in our world.  All of the music was just breath taking .  I love kids, all of them, even the ones that break your heart, and it is so uplifting for me to see kids doing wonderful, beautiful things.  I have zero aptitude for music, but I do so appreciate those that have music abilities.  Take care of your son and future his interests in music.  Tell him this old Texan has him on a high pedestal.  He has been given a blessed gift.
