Price was right.
« on: March 14, 2016, 08:41:32 am »
When I saw this I ran down and grabbed it (only 5 minutes away) before it disappeared, it's sitting in the back of my truck. My first thought was to rip off the cooling system and turn it into a heating cabinet. There are no dents or rust on it. Good idea? If not I am sure I can find another home for it.

Cool find, Perry!  How about a fridge for creamed honey?

I suppose I could see what it needs to get working as a fridge and use it to make creamed honey. Once it's creamed it doesn't need to be in there but while it is setting up it might be a great idea.

Oops!  I thought it was a working refrigerator.  As for that,  you could turn it off and store your creamed honey in place.
I have been looking at a wine cooler for creamed honey on Craigslist.  That's what made me think of creamed honey.  I wasn't able to connect with the seller yesterday, but maybe will today.

If you make it down here, you can check out the freezer I put a humidistat and thermostat in the wall of, and hooked them to a hotplate and mister. Cut the racks to hold frames. Made a queen incubator.

First it doesn't have belts so it is more likely freon issue. With that said plug it in and check out the fans Both the condenser fan on the outside and evaporator fan inside. Both these are cheap motors and if either of them are shot it will not work properly. also make sure the evaporator coil is clean. If there is a freon leak you may see an oil build up with dust build up. With the compressor being replaces it may be old oil from a few years back. Send me the model # It will be on the inside most the time on the top right side. I will look it up.

Nice find, Perry. If it stays cold maybe store some brewskies in there.  :)

If it happens to be a freezer cabinet, it will have an electric defrost coil along with the fan in the top, all that would be required would be a thermostat and a bit of simple rewiring.

If it really doesn't work and to get it going would cost more than you are interested in investing, you could lie it on its back, prop it  up angled toward the sun and (considering that it must be well insulated and has a clear glass door) it should do a good job as a solar wax extractor.

I like  efmesch Idea. He is right about getting it looked at. just to get a guy to look at it will be $90 if it needs freon and the leak is obvious and easy to find your looking at $180 or more before it is recharged with freon. But there are some minor, replace them yourself parts, that can keep the unit from running properly. By the way the add was written I doubt that it was looked at by a professional. When a commercial fridge or freezer go down the first thought people have is it must be freon but In most cases it is some other part, Fan motors, defrost timers, door switches, temperature limit switch. I would check it out to make sure it is not something simple first.

One of the first things to go is the start capacitor. Like Apisbees said someone who knows can tell PDQ.

It's sitting in a friends garage at the moment. I'll try and find out more. I know where and who it came from, another vendor at the market, and I'm trying to get more info on it.

First check the condenser coil fins for layers of dust clean with a brush if clogged. Plug it in and turn it on. you should be able to hear the compressor cut in and run and feel the vibration with your hand on the compressor. If the compressor runs. There may be a site glass in the line, If there is look at it when starting the compressor, You should not see air bubbles If you do it is an indication that the system is low on freon. there may be a few an start up but should run solid after 30 seconds.
2nd check that the fan that pulls the air thru the condenser coil is working
3rd after a few minutes of running feel the copper lines entering and leaving the evaporator coil. Use caution as they should be hot One should be warm the other one should be hot. Feel the large pipe coming in to the compressor it should be cold. if all this is working go to inside.
Check the inside coil fans It may not start right away as they are controlled by a temperature sensor also their may be a run switch controlled by the door. If so press switch and check the inside evaporator coil is getting cold and that the fans are funning.
An easy way to check the fans before running the fridge is to use a small stick put it thru the fan shroud and see if the fan blades turn freely If the don't the fan is most likely seized.
This is where I would start Let me know what the results are and we will go from there.
