FLY RODS and SHOES...........

truth be told i own more fly rods and he owns more shoes than i do.........

i just purchased two new fly rods this year, and he asked me how many fly rods do i need?  ..............

We no longer fish.  BUT, still have the rods and reels we used 35 years ago when we lived in Alaska and fished every weekend.  Helping my grandson learn to fish with this same equipment always brings a smile and a (true) story of the big ones that got away.  I'll keep them until they put me away.

Almost all my fishing stuff is out dated. Had to put a new odd eyelet on my surf rod cause it's so old to match. Still like toes in the sand and a long sunset.

I didn't make it to the Rocky Mountains last summer, and I really missed a year without trout fishing.  That is something that I intend to correct this year.  I have a couple of old Orvis rods that I dearly.  They load nice and slow, and can really launch a fly in the right hands.

many of my fly rods are like lee said, older, i put them away a long time ago, some fly reels too (my grandkids will get them). i started updating my fly rods and reels not sure how long ago.  i am a fan of rl winston fly rods made in twin bridges montana, i now have 6 of them, and two others, one made by diamondback when they were handmade in vermont.  like the stuff made in the usa. most of my updated reels are inexpensive orvis click/pawl battenkills, simple design, simple reel.  these reels (old design) are hard to find now, selling on ebay for well over 100 bucks! 

fishing is good for the soul, and teaching kids and grandkids to fish with whatever is pretty cool!

my grandfather made most of his own bamboo rods and tied his own flys to fish with..........wish i could fish with him, he would be so proud of me now and i know he would enjoy as i would. he passed before we ever had the chance to fish on the rivers and streams near red lodge, montana, but i watched him build his rods and tie his own wet flys and streamers to fish with when i was growing up.

i learned to fish with a flyrod at an early age, but loved fishing even with a spinning rod.............catching big catfish.........woo hooo!

catching any species of fish on a fly rod is a ton of fun....salmon, bass, pike, panfish, greyling, and trout!

my favorite is river/creek fishing, or floating a river/stream in a drift boat/raft........awesome, you get to see scenery you will never see! 

lee, we want to go back to alaska; where did you live in alaska?  where did you fish?

lazy, can give you a great place to go on the north fork of the blackfoot......800 acres ranch land; 3 private streams, ponds; close to the big blackfoot, and several other great streams nearby; in ovando, montana...........awesome place!

We lived in Eagle River, Alaska Just North of Anchorage.  We fished The Kenai River, Jim Creek, the Susitna Rivers (Big and Little Su).  We fished most often on the Willow River and the Deshka Rivers near.  A good time was had by all.

Hey squirt, i found if you bend the barb down on the hook when fly fishing, it doesn't hurt as much when you pull the hook out.  Not much of a fly fisherman, but love my ultralight rods and bait casting rods. We fish for catfish, crappy,pan fish,bass, (small mouth,line side, white bass, walleye) and sucker grabbing. Use to noddle cat fish and set trammel nets,wade with dad, uncles, and brothers with a mantle lantern and gig fish on the riffles in the summer time . The Mo. conservation dept. frown on this typ of fishing nowaday, and probably back then to . Jack

You fishermen (is there a gender neutral term for that?) should be here this week.  The Brazos river behind the house is full of bass runs.  Yellow catfish too.  The bass are breaking the water in groups,  sometimes out of the water.  Fisherman's paradise and no one is fishing!

jack, yes, have many of my barbs are crimped down on my flies for catch and release fishing for trout.  i use many trout flies for panfish and bass fishing, although will tie some extra flies for fishing for bass. many times this is a challenge and a good skill on a fly rod how not lose a fish with a crimped barb, the smaller the hook, the bigger the challenge!

the two rods i purchased this year would be considered ultalights!  two 3 weight fly rods, one a 6' 9", and one a 7' 9".  (for smaller streams, tight fishing or even on a boat/canoe).  these flyrods are both 5 piece sections (great for travel) and will handle fish of all sorts, hmmm; trout, panfish, crappie and bass, i would think from the 3 to 5 pound range?  depending on the size of the leader i would use..........geek speak? lol............   and skill to NOT break off the tip of the rod!..................

lol lee, forget the gender neutral thing.........i fish.......i don't get hung up in the gender designation on fishing!............
the brazos.........my gg grandfather/mother lived on the brazos.............so much i don't know and would like to know.........anyway, is the brazo primarly bass and catfish? warm water species?

i have fished for bass on a fly rod, ton of fun!!!  they flip, toss and turn, and jump above water and give you a good run!

It seems safe to say the Brazos is a warm water river around here, it may not be on over toward New Mexico.  Algae blooms kill all the fish in the river every couple years, so it is not fished heavily in this area.

Wife came home from Maine and brought her /our friend with her..  Both the girls caught a nice channel cat along with a few smaller ones.. I mostly took fish off and re baited etc... and we always argue over who gets the new rods...  My answer is to put a baitcaster on them, then she leaves them alone.....   Tried to teach her how to use one many years ago, ended up badly and she hasnt touched my cat rods since...   Looking back, I am quite glad she was already into the mentality of ignoring everything I said!!!
