Actually it works out to $1100/hive.  That's still pretty high, but if you consider a total loss of this years revenues of approximately $500/hive, as well as having to replace all wooden ware and bees and associated labour.  It's not exaggerated much.
My advice: worth price charged :)

Crimes like this baffle me. First of all, why? You would have to know someone willing to buy "hot" bees. Second, this is no snatch and grab, the chances of getting caught in the act are very good. If you don't have a ready customer where do you hide them. I'm thinking if you want to be a thief there are definitely more profitable ways to go. Well, good for the Canadian authorities and good for beekeepers in the area. Just hope the original owner/owners can recover their property.

This is the video made just after the theft. When you get to the point in the video at the extracting plant it will give you an idea how they came to the valuation.
Labonte is big in Quebec.
