This is how I do swarm traps!
« on: May 27, 2016, 04:42:59 pm »

OK, maybe it was not how I always did them, but it is how I do them from here on out!!! I have been struggling to get time to split my hives. Apparently they got tired of waiting for me to do it....
Ran to the house today to get a nuc for Ted to take hom in case he has another swarm...  I had previously made up all my spare hives and nucs to prepare for splitting, adding frames from supers to several of them...   So when i saw bees, my thought was, that they were just robbing out last years supers...   till i opened the box to shake them out...  NOPE!!!!

These bees now LIVE in this nuc....  so...  I set it aside and went to grab the one that was beside it, and thought.. no.. THESE bees are robbing.... I popped the lid...

nope!!!  These bees have moved in as well...
I have not checked for a queen in both boxes yet, will do that tomorrow morning when I go through all my hives.. provided the weather cooperates..
More good news,  the correct prop for my toon finally showed up...

The best news of the day? Ted came down and helped me PAINT..  Having a professional on hand when the paint is getting slung is a serious bonus!!!

so i am within about 6 pallets of being finished making tops and bottoms.. there is a light at the end of this tunnel.. of course, I have to make the boxes and frames for them all...  Boxes, not so tough, but the frames are going to be painful.

I make everything but the frames, we have a club member that makes and sells bee supplies. He sells frames for a dollar a piece put together glued and nailed, the lumber would almost cost that.(well not quite), But the time it takes to make them, then put them together. He told me he has3 table saws with different set ups.Jack

the frames cost me about 17 cents to make, not counting the foundation when I do use it...  and Ted, I had not considered that..  Very good point..   Perry! I can sell you trained bees cheap!!!

hehe, yep, they cost ME 17 cents each to make, which is why I am building all of my own frames, boxes, bottom boards, inner covers, tele covers etc....   Costs me less than 50 dollars to build the entire hive WITH frames...   Otherwise, I would never be capable of expanding like I currently am...        I believe Mann lake currently wants about $260.00 for a complete hive set up.. so this saves me about 210 dollars per hive, and so far has saved me over $31,000 dollars..  Of course some of that 31K gets whittled down for fancy new saws, blades, glue etc...   But the fact of the matter is, I HAVE those things paid for many times over now, so everything I build with them from here forward just makes them more valuable...  And my time??   What IS my time worth? I can send my wife a BILL... or, maybe negotiate some other type of payment???  8)

Check your last job and learn what your replacement is making. Then figure how much your time is worth. At that rate of pay, you may could have bought twice the hives.

Do I get to count the aggravation of dealing with a boss into that? Or... since my last job was as a gunsmith.. count being treated like THE criminal by the feds when my shop was broken into?
NOT a chance in hades. Next time a fed steps through my door one of us is going down. Probably me, but I'll go down swinging..   THAT is why I gave up my FFL...

Bosses... = One broken nose, one fat lip, one black eye..  Not counting punching a chief petty officer????    The one with the black eye apologized the following day and I worked for him for several more years (Heavy truck Mechanic) before getting my FFL... I quit a job working as a machinist for Pratt and Whitney because the supervisor was going to get hurt.. ( my wife told me I was finally growing up because I didnt flatten him???)
I have no tolerance for arrogance or abuse of power. Still don't...   Well, my wife tends to abuse her power, I just havent figured out how to take her down a notch and survive it....

so, 40K +/- a year.. in a year I couldnt buy the hives I have built, with the money I made and still pay the bills and eat...   150 ish hives at $260 each = $39,000.00.

NOW, I get to turn on the music, pop a beer, and cut wood... No one standing over my shoulder, and if another beek stops in, I can stop and shoot the bull and not get yelled at..   is that considered work?   Now stop being argumentative or I will call your wife and ask (bribe) her to hurt you!

:)   hehe, well, Iddee is like My father in law used to be.   He LOVED to argue, even if he didnt actually believe in the reasons he was arguing..  He argued for the argument, oh, and he REALLY enjoyed winding people up, and that doesnt count giggling like a maniac if you/they got hurt.. yeah, Iddee is very similar in character.. give you the shirt off his back, but argue with you about what color it is!!!
If you have room to run, just ask him how he likes the weather / living in South Carolina. Stops all argument while he decides how best to roast you on the grill!

Scott, you just stirred the pot putting iddee in South Carolina instead of North Carolina, but at his age he may not remember or know were he's at so your probably safe.  Jack

Dang, Lazy, it won't be as much fun now that you have me figured out.

BUT THAT WON'T STOP ME.   :P
