Our first cut outs
« on: July 03, 2016, 10:00:41 am »
My son and I had our first Cut Outs with the big guy himself yesterday. What an adventure.  The hive took refuge between panel boards and a stone chimney.  When the boards were removed, it was much bigger than we thought.  Took a few hours, got a 5 gallon bucket of comb honey (gonna let that strain soon!) 3 buckets of dirty honey and comb and GREAT experience

We missed the queen, so the big guy is going back to recapture the bees and the queen.

We left there and went to a second cut out and it was small and as my son said "Cute".  Got the hive put in a nuc box and waited for the rest to move over.

Asked my son, "want to do this again?" and he said 'YES!'

I got out with only 4 stings, my son about 8 and unfortunately, the big guy got about 20 on his face and head.

This was a lot of fun! Gonna do it again!

The first one looked like a tuffy for sure.

The second one I was thinking "WOW what a way to tear into the wall", then I saw it was a burned out building, easy peazy and nothing to put back either.

Took a while to figure out the last two pics.....cut out comb in a wheel barrow??..........sitting in the truck with the window rolled up taking pics with the A/C going?? (thought all of the round things might be the instrument panel on the dash reflecting on the rolled up window).

Good fun for all, glad to hear you have a young keep interested in getting started!!

I just got back from vacuuming the rest of the bees. Am combining them with yesterday's bees and brood. About 5 lbs. of bees. Should make a nice hive.

Well, the Big Guy said the small swarm we put in a nuc took flight once the queen was released from the clip.  :(  We'll find in a few days if he got the queen while vacuuming them up.

I checked the big cutout out today. We cut it out Saturday, meaning any eggs we banded in would hatch Tuesday. We had numerous eggs today, telling me we got the queen and she is laying well. There are about 5 frames well covered with bees. A good start for a cutout.

Hopefully since we gave her such a nice home, she won't be as mean!
