Tree Trap out
« on: July 05, 2016, 05:14:47 pm »
Set a trap out today for a local landowner. Bees are getting aggressive. Need to level out the box a little more. Tough terrain on the slope and ditch.

It doesn't look like you have a frame of open brood and eggs in the hive. If not, that's why they are aggressive.

Added the frame of eggs and open brood today. They calmed very quickly. Lots of fanning at the entrance when I left.

Looking good!!

Some of the trap out stands are tough to come up with, looks like you did a good job of it though!
Bees are bees and do as they please!

Checked on the trap out this evening. Bees still moving out of cone. Noticed 3 larvae dropped in cone that bees were attempting to remove. Has been on for a week now.

I usually just screw some metal shelf brackets to the tree.

I got this idea speaking with fellow Guilford Beekeeper, Roy Lowe.  My neighbor (and fellow beekeeper)  hunts and has several tree stands.   He set up the stand and I set up the bait hive.

Hey Jacobs. Is that a swarm trap, or a trap-out? I don't see a cone. ???

It is a trapout.  The cone is hard to see, but it is near the upper entrance/inner cover of the nuc.  I just got back from checking it and it looks like the nuc has plenty of bees and I can take it home and put another one up with a Wayne's Bee brood frame in it.  I just need to double check timing so that I am not moving it when the queen development is in the most delicate stage.

Update....
Have not seen any bees exiting hive for a few days. The bees have filled a medium super of drawn comb with honey. The queen cell they made that I found last week has disappeared. Not sure if it hatched and they tore down the cell. The two deep frames of brood I gave them are being backfilled with nectar. They are starting to draw more frames of foundation. I have more mediums with drawn comb that I could put in and add anothet box under the other full medium. Should I give them some more frames of capped brood? I'm kinda concerned if a queen hatched and she comes back from mating flight and has no room to lay.

She should not start laying for another week or more. In the meantime, they should draw comb in the deep. A frame of capped brood never hurts if there are enough bees to cover it.
