Troy's little hive of bees..........
« on: July 16, 2016, 01:44:00 pm »
Did a small cut out this morning, nice bees, only took two stings, one on the end of the nose and one on the forehead.

In and gone in just under three hours, had to pick up the pace a little at the end since another hive was starting to rob out the honey in the brood combs.

Found the queen and got her in a clip.

Nice job G3! It's always fun to see the comb from a wild nest, how the bees put it together

Wow, not a lot of space to work in there. Good find as far as locating where they were. Minimal damage to the building. :goodjob:

I wish they were all this easy, I have another one I am dreading......old hive with lots of honey, will be a robbing frenzy. I found that the exhaust on the bee vac spews out all of the raw nectar and honey scents drawing bees in from afar. Buckets with lids to put the honey combs and any scrap combs into do help out with the robbing for a short time though.

Agree, a robbing frenzy is not much fun.. can you do it at night?  Start before dark and you can have the defenders all sucked up and the rest of the hive will be demoralized by the time it is dark...     not to mention, it will be cooler at night.

Never done one after dark, past my bed time you know!!

Seems like the bee vac plays a big part in the robbing frenzy, it just fills the air with the smell of the hive for any bee to get a whiff of.

Your reasoning becomes clearer with each passing year..    I can WELL remember working two full time jobs..   Coming home at 1 AM to shower and go to bed, and being back at work at 7:00 the next day... That would most certainly KILL me today...
I imagine your observation about spreading the scent about from the bee vac is spot on... Wonder what would happen if you soaked a SOCK in Honey B Gone and taped it over the outlet???

now that is a good idea, was thinking of some type of hepa filter over the exhaust.
