Too funny, unless it happens to you! (More pics)
« on: August 08, 2016, 06:32:31 am »
Remember the trap-out I just started that went into the light fixture of an old farm house? The swarm moved into the one on the right hand side of the door, but I took a picture of the fixture on the left to give an idea of what it looked like.

Guess what happened yesterday! :)
Yup, I'm headed back over there to start another one. I told them it would look better anyway, more balanced.

I didn't take the ones as it progressed, but I did get a few after, and one when someone else was available to take it. While I was there, I noticed regular traffic coming and going out of the first trap-out box, and absolutely nothing coming out of the cone the whole time I was there? Is it possible that the colony in the wall where I was doing the first trap-out was on the verge of swarming before I started, and that it swarmed and moved in across the doorway? (It had been there for 2 years).
There are 2 yards owned by the "company" within a stones throw and while I was doing the second trap-out today, their flatdeck truck and trailer with the syrup tanks were there, so no doubt their hives may be plugging up with syrup and tossing swarms like crazy.
Strange to not see any bees coming out of that first cone so early on. ???

Could the bees have made it to the other light and used it as a 2nd entrance. Or they were not in the wall long enough to set up home and with the foragers not returning they absconded and entered the other light?

The first trap-out I did (right side) had been in there for 2 years. That trap-out was not even a week on and there was a huge swarm that moved into the other side of the door. The owner didn't see where it came from but said the whole front of the house was clouded with bees. I doubt it's a second entrance, why would the whole colony leave to just come in another way?
It is either another swarm that just by chance found that other light fixture, or the first one was about to swarm when I started the trap-out and just did so a few days after I set it.

I was thinking that also but you should still have bees exiting from it.

I used to believe that bees wanted to get a bit of distance between themselves and the mother colony, but have had TOO MANY swarms of my own that moved into an empty hive in my shed 50 yards away, or an empty nuc in the back of my truck to believe that any longer..   I think it is entirely possible the swarm/abscond came from the first trap out, though you still cant rule out a second swarm moving in.
