Nuc hive?
« on: September 06, 2016, 05:34:10 pm »
So I've been building my own wooden ware. So far I have built enough hive body's , tops and bottoms for two 10 frame hives. Then I decided to build a 5 frame nuc. As you can see I got off on my measurements and ended up with a six frame. Should I trash it and start over ,or use it as is. I understand nothing you buy will fit it but it's just a nuc. All your thoughts are appreciated.

You should build 5 more just like it and bring them to me. I'll dispose of them for you.   ;D

The bees don't care how many frames are in the box, as long as you add another box before they run out of room. When I'm grafting, I would love to have some 6 frame boxes.

Wait.. why does HE get preferential treatment??? Just because he answered before I did?      :\'(

he is right...   I have considered, in the past building a hybrid box, since I also make my own frames.. a box that measures 7.5 inches deep... NOT a deep, and not a medium, but it would mean I do not have to cut down the boards I buy anymore...   However.. I soon realized, that Menards sells boards that are .7.2 to 7.8 inches wide... their quality is worthless, and I could never standardize without cutting anyhow, so I keep using mediums...
I know folks who like 8 frame equipment, I know a couple that lives 15 miles away that KEEP their bees in 5 frame nucs year round.. expanding to 5 boxes at one point, before splitting back to two boxes...
6 frame boxes fit right in between there somewhere. I really wouldnt care about the nimber of frames as much as I cared about the DEPTH and interchangeability of those frames..
they look good! Well done!!! OH, and, I would be happy to test six frame nucs for you, and give you a detailed analysis of their effectiveness!!!!

After I got them finished and added frames that's when I realized I had made a mistake. Good thing is I made the boxes then made the bottom and top to fit. That one has a screened bottom and a groove under the screen to slide a 1/4" pc of plywood in. I am still not sure if I want screened bottom so that's what I came up with. Iddee just lives a few miles from me, when I met him he offered to help me, so I was returning the favor..he's a really nice guy.

You got it backward, CBT. When I got rid of them all, she made me bring one back. She didn't want to be totally out of them

Bottom line is she likes to get a sting or 2 every so often. Its a long way to drive as oppose to it being right in the back yard.

We all know Iddee wants nothing to do with that.

A long drive for him is to the fishing hole
