More Bees in a barrel

To get another hive, Yes.

You could put a weak hive there and trap enough bees to make it strong, then remove it and repeat. You may boost 3 or 4 hives before the barrel is empty.

Hi Everyone, 

Got a call about this and went to pick them up this morning.  I was told they've only been there a few weeks.  Originally I thought I'd haul them home and trap them out next spring (if they survive the winter).  There's just no weight there.  Lots of bees were bearding but when I lifted the barrel I thought uh oh!  I've never done a trap out but it seems pretty straight forward however, unless I'm mistaken, there is a time period of a few weeks to complete the job.  I'm not sure we'll have it, but then I REALLY can't see them making it on their own this winter.  I can't think of a way to feed them either.  I could do an open feeder but we've had some nasty robbing going on so I am afraid to get that started.  I think it's a pretty neat place for the girls to move into though.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.  Ted

You posted while I was typing Iddee.  So I could place a weak hive that already has bees in it to use as the trap?  They wouldn't fight?

It's also against to keep bees in a hive without removable frames. I would move the barrel in the middle of the day and place a weak hive in it's place. Move it 100 feet or more. Then if they still beard, do it again with another weak hive.

Yeah, the legal thing is what stopped us.  Would you recommend moving it tomorrow or starting a trap out?

With a beard that size, I would shake them off and move it. Set a weak hive in it's place and they will take up with it.  "Instant trapout".

Shook the beard off and moved the barrel to the next property over.  Set a weak hive in the barrels place.  Trying my first trap out.






There's 4 drawn frames in the nuc and a frame of brood just like iddee said.  The top box is a feeder.

OK. Why? The bees leave the barrel and go to the field. They return with nectar and go to the barrel entrance. That's where you need the catch box.

I've got the bottom board (front porch) snugged up to the large end of the funnel.  In my haste I neglected to bring my camera.  I'll check it tomorrow and get a pic to make sure I've got it right.  No kidding, I can't believe they let me drive much less carry a weapon or vote.  I watched that video, how many times, and still didn't catch that.  Nothing about beekeeping is intuitive.  It just makes sense that the catch box would go by the small end of the funnel, until you know the reasoning.  Nothing intuitive, you either know or you don't.  I didn't.  Thanks again iddee.  Ted
