Just some pics
« on: January 12, 2017, 09:24:09 am »
Just a few pics from one of my yards this past summer. Rachel, one of the family who owns the property took all of these except the artichoke one.
Yes, that was a swarm from one of my hives! :-[ ;D :D

I don't really like losing swarms (who does), but when they happen they are one of the most beautiful things to behold. ;D

Perry,

Is that you behind the shrubbery in the last pic?

Perry,

Yup, it is. I got the call from Rachel (who took the pictures) that a swarm was happening so I stopped what I was doing and drove over.
I'm lucky that way, my yards are only a few minutes apart, and my yard owners do their best to keep me up to date if stuff happens. This swarm landed in the barberry bushes (prickly) so I just shoved a box close and let them walk in.
I have to be honest though, when I went to pick this up later in the evening when it was close to dark they had taken off. I was surprised, they had moved in and settled down, but I hadn't bothered putting any brood or anything in, despite the fact there were 12 hives a few feet away. :eusa_wall:

I have had the wonderful pleasure of standing in the middle of a swarm.

I think that swarms like to distance themselves from the parent hive.
I don't set up bait hives (swarm traps) in my apiary. I place them some distance away.

I have to agree. It stinks when a hive swarms.. but man it is magical standing among them while they are swarming...

I have had swarms move into hives inside my bee shed about twenty yards or so from my hives on several occasions...  The last time that happened i had 40 hives in my home yard...   I have always believed that bees liked to move further away from the parent hive as well...   So...   Maybe I have dumb bees?  If so... I will take it!
