First time with bee's and it was a cut out!!

I have to say yesterday was a day I will never forget. Farmer called and said he had some bee's in a tree he waned removed. I have watched every video out there and thought I had this down pat!!!! Was I wrong. I made my first horizontal cut at 6' up on the 30" dead red oak, 4" in, it went to mush. So I proceeded to finish my cut of about 18" around and not get into the mushy part. Then I made my first vertical cut and got covered in honey. Long story short, hive ended up being 6' tall and 26" wide. I saw baby bee's being born. An amazing site to see. I saw more brood then I could of ever imagined. I got over 50lbs of honey and prob 35lbs of comb after cutting out brood and rubber banding it all in my super. I have never seen so many bees in my life. Got STUNG twice. Never could find the queen. Watched bee's fanning which was so cool. It was so freaking Awesome.

Countryboy, where were the bees fanning? If on your collection box that MAY be a good sign that you got the queen. Ted

CONGRATULATIONS!
The first cut-out a person ever does is one to remember alright, and usually not for the right reasons. It sounds like you had a plan, adjusted it when you needed to, and got the job done. If you had posted sting pics Chef Unknown would probably be in the kitchen right now.
Well done!

Had to out of state today to bury my 10 yr old nephew, so I didn't get to go back and check. I left the super at the tree and will go check on it in the morning and bring it home tomorrow night at dark. They were fanning on the super at times and sometimes I would see several hundred marching in, but not a continuous fan. No matter what it was one of the coolest things I have ever done. Perry, I was stung once on the head and once on the finger with no swelling, so I couldn't post a pic for my humble pie!!!

You did well.
My condolences on your nephew, it isn't fair to have to deal with such a loss.

I am sure you did fine. Jumping right in is the best way to learn with most things! It's hard to find the queen in a tree cut out. I have returned to my tree cut outs to find a mass of bees and the queen in the middle. Fanning is a good sign but not always the most accurate. I have knocked bees in a box and and saw fanning but the queen is still on the tree. Let's hope you got it though!

Look like you might soon have to add a second deep!

Is that just for the space. If you have the queen she may go and lay eggs in the super. Understand if it is a temporary quick fix. We let her almost fill the 1st deep and add another. Just sayin

Depends if it's a brood box or a honey super.
Terminology is confusing and not standard.
I call deeps "deeps", and mediums are what I use to collect honey (supers), but some folks use deeps for their honey and still call them "supers".
Confusing? Yup!
