vandy has another swarm
« on: April 14, 2017, 08:22:28 pm »
Hey folks.. I have a lot to say but I feel I need to try to keep it simple and not give too much info.

I had a new swarm today from the NUC I brought home around the beginning of April.

The NUC swarmed into the ( swarm tree) about 20 feet from Nuc the first week I had it..   It swarmed back to the same nuc box within 4 hours. I moved it into a deep 10 frame with all I had, undrawn foundation.  Gave it sugar water.

Has been very busy with all indications of health.

I left town yesterday at noon. Wife called about 1.00 PM  and let me know this box was swarming back to the same swarm tree.  I knew I would be back today and I was traveling to get some queens for other hive so I just was willing to let it go until I got back.

Around 3 o'clock she phoned and told me they had swarmed from the tree back to the same box they came from.

Today when I got home I went out to check on things. As I was there they began to swarm again. This time they went to a different tree much more difficult to get to.

As I was contemplating what could possibly be going on with this NUC/ now 10 frame deep I decided to go into the box and see.  Still a lot of bees, a whole lot of bees.  No sign of a queen, no eggs that I could see, no larva, but some capped brood. ( sound familiar)

I found 6 capped queen cells on 2 different frames.

I want to stop here for commentary because it gets a lot more complicated after this.  For now lets just deal with the fact that in less than 2 weeks this Nuc to start and after moved to a 10  deep would swarm and return within a couple of hours???   I think we should start with just that aspect and then I will begin to add to the story.

Not sure what is going on with that happening so often. Try placing a frame with open brood in there to anchor them maybe? That's what's great about keeping bees, they will always be a bit of a mystery, and just when you think you have them figured out they'll throw a curve at you.
